Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University wrapped up its 2017 campaign with a pair of losses to visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe DeSales University. Game one was 15-1 and game two, 9-3.
The Aggies finished with a 15-18 record overall and a 6-15 mark in conference games while the Bulldogs improved to 25-15 overall and 17-4 and will enter next week's MAC Freedom tournament as the number one overall seed.
DeSales got out to an early lead in the opener with six runs in the first inning highlighted by a three-run homer to left field by Tommy Epsaro. Tyler Sweeney and Preston Amato picked up RBIs in the second and third innings to extend the advantage to 8-0. In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs tacked on two unanswered runs to take a double-digit lead.
Steve Smith got DelVal on the board in the bottom of the fifth when he doubled to the gap in right-center and later scored on an error.
Connor Lafferty picked up five RBIs for DeSales in the final two innings with a single that scored one in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh as the Bulldogs took game one, 15-1.
Lafferty finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored while Amato and Epsaro were each 4-for-5 with three runs scored and multiple RBIs. Andrew Schuler pitched a complete game to earn the victory with 12 punch outs.
Kyle Wenger led the Aggies with a 2-for-3 effort and
Kevin Crill suffered the loss on the mound.
In game two, DelVal trailed 3-0 as it came to bat in the bottom of the second when
Cayton Curtis took an 0-2 pitch up the middle to score
Bobby Altieri from second base.
The Bulldogs put together a five-run rally in the third thanks to three hits and one error. Epsaro hit his second home run of the day, a solo shot to right center, during that run.
Sammy Amos scored the next two runs for the Aggies. In the fifth, he scored on a wild pitch and in the sixth he was driven in by Smith.
DeSales tacked on one more in the top of the seventh to take the final game, 9-3. Alex Condello led the Bulldogs with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI and four other players had multiple-hit games, including Sweeney who had two hits with two RBIs.
Amos led the Aggies with a 3-for-3 effort and two runs scored while
Josh Morgan suffered the loss after going three innings and striking out three.
For Wenger, Saturday marked the end of his historic career and, with his efforts at the plate today, he finished as the school's all-time hit leader with a career batting average of .448 (185 hits in 413 at-bats). He also finished first all-time in triples (16), third in hits (185), third in stolen bases (63), fourth in doubles (37), fourth in runs scored (127), tied for seventh in home runs (13) and eighth in RBIs (101).
