Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team celebrated Senior Day in style as the Aggies swept a non-conference doubleheader from Clarks Summit University, 8-1 and 4-3.
DelVal improved to 14-15 overall while the Defenders fell to 8-22.
The Aggies honored their six seniors –
Bobby Altieri,
Nate Cummings,
Cayton Curtis,
Trevor Dalton,
Wayne Kinsey and
Kyle Wenger – with a ceremony in-between games and all six contributed to the sweep.
The first game belonged to Dalton on the mound as he went six-plus innings and allowed just one run and six hits while striking out four. He came out to a big applause with two outs in the seventh and picked up his fourth win in seven decisions this year.
Dalton's teammates staked him to a big lead as they racked up seven runs on seven hits in the first inning. Altieri drew a one-out walk and Wenger followed with a single. After a fielder's choice,
Josh Morgan had an RBI single. DelVal then executed a double steal with
Sammy Amos coming home for a 2-0 lead.
Troy Lachenmayer had an RBI single while
Matt Beyer brought in two with a single. Trevor Musselman had a run-scoring base hit of his own while Altieri came up again and plated one with a single for a 7-0 lead.
The Aggies added a run in the fourth as Wenger led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Amos and scored on a double-play. Clarks Summit got its lone run in the fifth on a run-scoring hit by Austin Masser.
Four players had two hits apiece for DelVal, including Wenger who went 2-for-4 with two run scored.
In the second game, the Aggies picked up an early run in the second as Musselman doubled to left and Kinsey followed with a single through the right side that brought home Musselman. Kinsey then stole second and moved up to third before being stranded there.
It remained a 1-0 score until the fifth when Altieri hit a double down the left field line and Wenger drew a walk. Both moved up a base on a passed ball and they both scored on a single by Amos.
The Defenders tied the game in the sixth with RBIs by Domingo Rodriguez, Benjamin Hurlburt and Joe Chupick.
However, the Aggies regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth thanks to the legs of Cummings. First, he reached on an error as his hustle down the line drew a wild throw. Cummings then stole second and third and was 90 feet from home with just one out. DelVal put the suicide squeeze on, but Altieri missed the bunt attempt. However, Cummings scored on the pitch, a steal of home, for the 4-3 advantage.
Morgan came back out to pitch the seventh and retired the first two batters before Connor Kopnik singled to put the tying run on base. Kopnik tried to steal second and get into scoring position, but Lachenmayer gunned him down to end the game.
Morgan picked up his first win of the year as he went the distance and allowed three runs and seven hits while fanning four. Amos was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Musselman was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Kergan Laman pitched six strong innings for Clarks Summit, but suffered the loss.
DelVal will host John Jay College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, May 2 (3:30 p.m.).
