Kevin Crill pitched eight-plus innings and gave up one run to lead Delaware Valley University to a 7-1, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom triumph over visiting FDU-Florham.
The victory moved the Aggies to .500 at 11-11 overall and 5-8 in league games while the Devils fell to 10-15 and 4-9. The series will shift to Madison, NJ on Saturday for a double-header slated for 12 p.m.
In this game, FDU-Florham threatened in the top of the first as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Crill worked out of the jam by striking out Kevin Smiegocki.
DelVal came out in the bottom of the first and got on the board when
Sammy Amos delivered a double down the left field line that scored
Nate Cummings and
Kyle Wenger to make it 2-0. Then in the third, the Aggies doubled their lead on a sacrifice fly from
Josh Morgan and a single through the left side by Beyer.
Crill held the lead by forcing the Devils into double-plays to end the inning in both the fourth and fifth. In the fifth, it was a sharp line drive back to the mound that Crill squeezed and threw to first to double up the runner.
DelVal extended its lead in the sixth when Wenger hit a two-out triple over the left fielder's head to score Crill and
Steve Smith. Wenger came in to score on an error on the next play to make it 7-0.
Crill surrendered just seven hits through eight innings and came on to pitch the ninth where he struck out the first batter he faced before giving up four singles that resulted in one run.
Hunter Mease then came on for the save with the bases loaded and got a ground ball double play to end the game and preserve the 7-1 victory.
Crill pitched eight-plus innings for the second straight start. He had four strikeouts and forced two double plays while walking four to improve to 2-3 on the year. Wenger fueled the offense with a 3-for-5 effort, three runs scored and two RBIs. Amos was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Beyer went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
For the Devils, Nick DeAngelis was 3-for-5 and drove in the lone run, and Joseph Bonaccorso and Christopher Franco each picked up a pair of hits. Brad Norris pitched a complete game and struck out four batters in the loss.
