Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University and Wilkes University completed its three-game, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) series by splitting a doubleheader on Friday. The host Aggies took the opener, 6-3, before suffering a 14-3 setback in the second game.
DelVal moved its record to 10-10 overall and 4-8 in league action. The Colonels, who took the opening game of the series on Thursday, saw their marks go to 8-17 and 3-9
DelVal got on the board in its first at-bat in the opener when
Nate Cummings drove in
Kevin Crill who was aboard with a leadoff single. Wilkes quickly got the run back in the second on a two-out, RBI double from James Brown.
In the bottom of the frame, the Aggies responded with three runs, all with two outs. Back-to-back errors brought in one run and then Crill delivered a two-run double to left field to make it 4-1.
The Colonels cut their deficit to two in the top of the third thanks to an RBI single from Joe Champi. They tacked on another in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Brady Wing that scored Brown to make it 4-3.
DelVal got an insurance run in the fifth as Crill got aboard with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Wenger.
Wilkes had the tying run on base in the sixth inning, but reliever
Hunter Mease got a strikeout to end the threat. In the seventh, DelVal added to it's lead as
Matt Beyer singled up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then reached third on a bunt single by
Jeremy Stewart.
Bobby Altieri came in as a pinch-hitter and laid down a bunt that allowed Beyer to score to make it 6-3.
The Colonels brought the tying run to the plate after a pair of walks, but Mease was able to get a groundball double play to end the game and earn his second save of the year.
Steve Smith improved to 3-1 as he went five innings giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five. Crill was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the offense.
For Wilkes, Brown was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Quinn Kelly allowed three earned runs in five innings and took the loss.
The Aggies sent
Brendan Giampa out to pitch game two, but he suffered an injury and was forced to come out after facing just three batters. The Colonels put up two runs in the stanza on RBI hits from Tyler Walther and Matt Reinart.
Each team scored in the second inning on RBI singles. DelVal's came off the bat of Beyer and plated
Sammy Amos to make it 3-1. The Aggies then tied the game in the bottom of the third. Cummings reached on a single and Wenger got aboard on an error before
Josh Morgan laced a double down the left field line to score both.
Brown put Wilkes back on top in the fourth with an RBI single to center field and it added one more after a failed pick-off attempt to take a 5-3 advantage. The Colonels then scored eight runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Brown was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Wing, Jorge Gonzalez and Joshua Slocum knocked in two runs apiece. Johnny Jan, Jr. earned the win.
For the Aggies in game two, Morgan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Beyer had two hits with an RBI.
