Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE (FL) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team opened its 2017 season with a pair of losses to Houghton College on its Spring Break trip to Florida. The Aggies dropped the first game, 6-5, in nine innings and followed with a 17-5 setback in the nightcap.
DelVal struck for three runs in the top of the second of the opener thanks to bases-loaded walks to
Kevin Crill and
Bobby Altieri and an RBI single by
Kyle Wenger. However, the Highlanders responded with five runs in their half of the stanza.
The Aggies then tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Crill had a two-out single, advanced to third on an error and scored on another miscue. In the fifth,
Jeremy Stewart reached third base on a walk, a wild pitch and an error. He then scored on a ground out by
Sammy Amos.
It remained 5-5 until the bottom of the ninth when Houghton loaded the bases with two outs and Nicholas Meichiore drew a walk to bring in the winning tally.
Five different Aggie had hits in the first game.
Jeremy Hefele started and went five innings while
Josh Morgan took the loss in relief.
The nightcap was all Highlanders as they had a pair of seven-run innings and finished the game with 24 hits. They scored seven runs in both the first and seventh innings and had another three over the third and fourth stanzas. Bryan Hodge and David Wessells knocked in three runs apiece.
For DelVal, it notched a run in the first on an RBI single from Amos, two in the fifth on RBIs by Amos and Morgan, and two unearned runs in the seventh. Amos was 1-for-2 with the two runs batted in while Morgan and
Matt Beyer had the remaining hits. Crill started and took the loss.
