Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University opened Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play with a doubleheader split with King's College. The Aggies dropped game one, 5-3, but bounced back with a 3-2 victory in game two.
It was the first time each team has taken the field in two weeks, as weather has played a factor in postponing games since spring break. Today's contests were initially scheduled to take place on the Monarchs' home turf, but were moved to Doylestown due to field conditions in Wilkes-Barre. However, King's still played as the home team today.
Jeremy Hefele got the start for DelVal (6-3) in game one and ran into trouble in the first inning. After getting the first out, he walked the next two batters and each eventually came around to score to make it 2-0 after one. Kyle Lupas and Brad Wilkins picked up the RBIs in the inning for the Monarchs (6-6). Lupas picked up his second RBI the next inning when he singled to right-center to plate Chris Rebar.
The Aggies got on the board in the top of the fourth when 2015 MAC Freedom Player of the Year
Kyle Wenger laced a single to center field and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by
Sammy Amos.
King's tacked on two more in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 5-1. Brad Wilkins got aboard with a leadoff single and came around to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Tom Gibbons. Gibbons eventually scored an unearned run after a throwing error.
DelVal threatened in the final inning as
Kevin Crill led off and reached on an error. Wenger walked and Amos followed with a double to center that scored Crill.
Josh Morgan came up next and drove in Wenger with a sacrifice fly to center, but that was all the Aggies could muster as they dropped game one, 5-3.
Amos went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Wenger was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Hefele pitched five-plus innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits and seven walks. Wilkins led King's with a 2-for-3 effort, one RBI and one run scored. Nick Deno pitched six innings giving up five hits and one earned run in the win. John Wickiser pitched the seventh and picked up the save.
In the nightcap, the Monarchs got on the board in the first inning on an unearned run. The Aggies got the run back in the fourth when Amos drove in Wenger who was aboard with a double.
King's regained the lead in the fifth inning thanks to a leadoff home run from Rebar, his second of the year. The Aggies responded in the sixth with two runs on one hit to take a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish. Crill led off the inning with a single and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Altieri. Amos came up next and picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Crill to tie the game. With Wenger on third, after a wild pitch and stolen base, Morgan came to the plate and beat out a would-be double play for the game-winning RBI that scored Wenger.
Needing a shutdown inning in the bottom of the frame, DelVal called on relief pitcher
Brendan Giampa, who stranded two Monarch batters and got out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the seventh, Giampa struck out the final two batters to seal the 3-2 Aggie victory.
Trevor Dalton started the game for DelVal and pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two for his third win. Giampa was credited with his first save. Crill went 2-for-4 with one run scored and Wenger was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Amos picked up two RBIs and Morgan got one.
Dan Hartson started in game two for King's and went six-plus innings surrendering four hits and two earned runs with three punch outs.
