Box Score 2 ST. DAVIDS (PA) – Eastern University completed a three-game, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom series sweep of Delaware Valley University with a pair of home wins on Saturday. The Eagles rallied for a 14-9 triumph in the opener and followed with a 4-3 win in the second contest.
The Aggies, who played six conference games over a five-day span, fell to 11-12 overall and 3-10 in the MAC Freedom while Eastern ran its mark to 12-14-3 overall and 5-8 in league action.
DelVal jumped out to a 6-0 in the opener as it scored a run in the first, two in the second and three more in the third.
Corey White had an RBI single in the first while
Kevin Crill and
Matt Dewald drove in tallies in the second.
Nate Cummings provided an RBI double in the third and
Ben Lippincott drove in the other team in the stanza with a single.
Eastern got back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the third, but the Aggie added another in the fourth on
Bobby Altieri's run-scoring single. The Eagles made it a 7-6 game with two in their half on the fourth before DelVal countered in fifth as Lippincott drove in his third run of the game.
However, Eastern blew the game open with eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth, with all eight coming with two outs. Angelo Kelly, Timmy Gorton, Andrew Boykin and Andrew Check each had two-run hits in the stanza.
Both teams scored single runs in the sixth for the 15-9 final. DelVal's tally came on a solo home run by Dewald, who finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Lippincott was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while Altieri was 4-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Chris Kelly took the loss. Boykin and Gorton drove in four runs apiece for the Eagles.
The nightcap saw all seven runs come in the first two innings of the game. The Aggies struck for one in the top of the first as Dewald smacked his second home run of the day, this one to straightaway center field.
Eastern responded with four runs off of three hits and one DelVal error in its half of the first. The Aggies made it a 4-3 contest in the second as Lippincott had a two-out, two-run single. DelVal managed to put just two runners into scoring position for the remaining five innings as Tommy Strazza got the win for the Eagles.
Jeremy Hefele did not allow an earned run over six innings of work for DelVal. He gave up six hits and fanned three. Lippincott was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Altieri was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
DelVal will host Summit University for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19.
