Box Score WINCHESTER (VA) – Delaware Valley University's comeback attempt at Shenandoah University fell just short as the Aggies dropped an 8-6, non-conference decision.
The Hornets improved to 3-2 on the young season while the Aggies slipped to 1-2.
DelVal never led in the contest, but tied it up at 2-2 just 85 seconds into the second quarter when
Nick Shendge scored off a
PJ Rafferty assist (
Chris Johnsen picked up the first goal for the Aggies in the opening quarter off a feed from
Austin Sensenig). Shenandoah scored three of the next four goals – DelVal's lone tally came from Rafferty – to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Connor Bishop's second goal of the game with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter gave the Hornets their largest lead of the game a 6-3 Sensenig struck two minutes later off a
Cori Grobes assist and Rafferty opened the fourth quarter with a goal just 16 seconds in to make it a one-goal contest.
Stephen LaTona answered for Shenandoah, but back came the Aggies as
Tyler Roberto found the back of the net with 10:04 remaining. The teams went scoreless for more than six minutes before LaTona gave the Hornets some breathing room with his third goal of the afternoon.
DelVal outshot Shenandoah, 33-32, but the Hornets had the edge in faceoff (12-7) and ground balls (30-18). Rafferty had two goals and one helper while Sensenig had a two-point performance. Shendge had a tally and four ground balls.
Jon Fogarty stopped 13 shots in net.
LaTona finished with three goals, two assists and five ground balls for the Hornets while Connor Bishop added two goals and two assists. Ben Judy made 14 saves for the win.
The Aggies return home on Wednesday, March 16 for a non-conference tilt against Centenary College.
