Taylor Teliszewski and
Taylor Spleen combined for seven goals as Delaware Valley University notched its fifth win of the season with a 14-8, non-conference triumph over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University.
The Aggies, just in their second year as an intercollegiate sport, improved to 5-3 on the season. They will begin their six-game quest through the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom when they host Wilkes University on Saturday, April 9.
DelVal never trailed in Thursday's game and scored just 45 seconds in when Spleen found the back of the net. The Griffins (1-7) tied it up with 23:54 remaining, but Teliszewski answered just nine seconds later. Teliszewski scored in-between a pair of Gwynedd Mercy tallies and the game was tied at 3-3 with 9:12 left in the first half.
The Aggies scored back-to-back just 55 seconds left as Spleen and
Jacqueline Ricks connected. The Griffins' Danae Perrymond followed with a goal, but Ricks answered off a feed from Teliszewski with 1:21 to go and DelVal took a 6-4 lead into the break.
The Aggies needed just nine seconds to score in the second half as
Kara Imes won the draw control, came down the field and fed Teliszewski for her third goal of the game. Brianna Greer answered for Gwynedd-Mercy, but back came DelVal with three goals in a three-minute span (Teliszewski,
Graeleigh Lackey and
Krystal Serdinsky) for a 10-5 advantage. The Griffins pulled to within on three separate occasions, but the Aggies countered each time and got their remaining tallies from Janee Rhone, Spleen, Lackey and Imes.
DelVal set a program record with 41 shots in the game and had a 29-28 advantage in ground balls. Teliszewski added an assist to her four goals for a five-point afternoon. She also tied for team-high honors with four ground balls. Spleen had three goals, four draw controls and three ground balls. Lackey and Ricks each had two goals and one assist while Rhone caused five turnovers in the contest.
Amanda Dietrich stopped nine shots in net.
Perrymond, Kerri Flanagan and Morgan McAndrews notched two goals apiece for Gwynedd Mercy. McAndrews also had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Bria Gillard was credited for 13 saves.
