Box Score MADISON (NJ) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team took the first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom series of the season as the Aggies, behind a complete-game performance from
Ben Lippincott, downed host FDU-Florham, 8-5.
DelVal, which split Saturday's twinbill at home with the Devils, improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action. FDU-Florham slipped to 5-8 and 1-2.
Lippincott went the full nine innings for his first decision of the year. The junior permitted just two earned runs and seven hits while striking out five.
Lippincott's teammates quickly put runs on the board as they scored three times on three hits in the top of the first.
Kevin Crill led off with a walk, moved up two bases thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by
Kyle Wenger.
Matt Dewald followed a base hit and
Sammy Amos drew a walk to load the bases.
Jeremy Stewart knocked Wenger in with a sacrifice fly and
Corey White followed with a single that plated Dewald.
The Devils answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Aggies countered in the third as Wenger singled, stole second and came around to score on a Dewald base knock through the right side. DelVal then opened up an 8-1 advantage with four runs in the fourth, including a two-run double by
Bobby Altieri and an RBI double from Dewald.
FDU-Florham picked up a pair of runs in the fourth and made things interesting with two more in the eighth, but Lippincott retired five of the final six batters for the win.
Dewald was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Wenger, the reigning MAC Freedom Player of the Year, added three hits, four stolen bases and two RBI in five at-bats. Altieri knocked in two with a 1-for-4 showing while
Mike Anusky was 2-for-4 with a triple.
Christopher Franco and Bryan Pieschel had two hits apiece for the Devils. Matt Zingaro allowed seven earned runs over five innings and took the loss.
DelVal begins a three-game series with conference foe Wilkes University on Thursday, March 24. The Aggies will host the nine-inning single game that day before the series shifts to Edwardsville for Friday's doubleheader.
