Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Eastern University remained in the Freedom Conference playoff hunt as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from host Delaware Valley University, 9-4 and 4-1.
The setback dropped the Aggies to 10-19 overall and 2-14 in conference games while the Eagles improved to 14-20 overall and 10-11 in the Freedom. They are done with conference play and now must wait to see how games play out next week as most teams still have contests that have to be made up from earlier postponements.
Senior
Mike Kearney took the mound for Delaware Valley in game one and retired the first three batters in order. The Aggies came to bat in the bottom of the first and
Kyle Wenger connected on his fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot deep over the right field fence.
Eastern got one back in the top of the second when Andrew Check singled home Eric Rossi, who reached base on an error. The Eagles then struck for six runs on five hits in the third to open up a 7-2 lead. Rossi connected for an RBI triple in that frame and came around to score on a double to left-center from Craig Stanley.
The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third.
Jeremy Stewart then came to the plate and singled to left field to drive in one.
Corey White was the next batter and his infield single just past third base plated Wenger to make it 7-4.
Eastern went on to score a run in the fourth and fifth innings while holding Delaware Valley off the board the remainder of the game to claim the 9-4 victory in the opener.
Wenger was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored and
Austin Bregman went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Eastern was led by a 2-for-4 effort from Angelo Kelly while seven different batters picked up RBIs. Kearney took the loss while Austin Little got the win for Eastern
In game two, the Eagles struck for three runs in the top of the first off of three hits, including an RBI triple from Joe Grato. Grato eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Rossi. They would tack on another in the second when Delaware Valley surrendered a bases loaded walk to Timmy Gorton.
Delaware Valley's lone run in the contest came from a familiar source as Wenger connected for his second home run of the day and sixth of the season, a long shot to deep right-center field. That was all the offense that either team would put up the rest of the way as Eastern held on for the 4-1 victory and the series sweep.
Jake Richard got the nod for the Aggies in game two, went six innings and took the loss. Seniors
Randy Forsythe and
Jimmy McCabe combined to pitch a scoreless seventh inning. The two, along with Kearney, were honored in-between games for their time with Delaware Valley.
Ryan Kehr pitched a complete game of four-hit ball while allowing just one run for the Eagles. Kelly was 2-for-2 from the dish with a pair of walks and a run scored.
