Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – M.J. Caro's shorthanded goal with 44.5 seconds remaining proved to be the decisive tally as Manhattanville College recorded an 8-7 victory over host Delaware Valley College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
The win improved the Valiants to 4-4 overall. The Aggies, who were making their conference debut in their first intercollegiate season, saw their overall mark fall to 2-6. They will return to action on Wednesday, April 8 with a road trip to Freedom foe FDU-Florham.
Delaware Valley took a 7-6 lead with just 4:12 remaining as
Graeleigh Lackey was awarded a free position shot and she connected for her third of the game and 14
th of the season. However, Manhattanville answered less than two minutes later as Sarah Dalsey got loose for an unassisted tally.
The Valiants appeared to have taken an 8-7 lead with 1:47 remaining, but two players dropped their sticks after the goal, causing a violation and taking the goal off the field. The non-scored was penalized, putting the Aggies a player up. Delaware Valley lost possession and Manhattanville came down and went ahead on Caro's tally.
The Aggies were awarded a free positon shot just 10 seconds later, but
Kara Imes' attempt went just wide. Delaware Valley was called for a foul on the ensuing ground ball battle and the Valiants were able to run out the clock for the win.
Manhattanville scored the first two goals of the game before Lackey got the Aggies on the board off a
Lydia Spakosky assist with 12:28 left in the first half. The Valiants eventually took a 3-1 lead into the break.
Taylor Teliszewski scored the Aggies' first two goals of the second half with a Manhattanville tally in-between. Imes tied the contest with 20:02 left and gave Delaware Valley its first lead just more than three minutes later. Lackey made it 6-4 with a free position goal with 15:02 remaining. The Valiants tied the game over the next four minutes, leading to the wild finish.
Manhattanville held advantages of 33-16 in shots, 24-15 in ground balls and 11-6 in draw controls.
Sarah Fenwick was spectacular in defeat as the freshman set a school record with 15 saves, including 10 in the second half.
