Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University picked up a walk-off win at home for the second game in a row, this time on an error, as the Aggies tallied an 11-10, 10-inning victory over Freedom Conference foe FDU-Florham.
The win improved Delaware Valley to 8-12 overall and 2-7 in league action while the Devils fell to 6-17 and 4-7.
It's been a wild last four days for the Aggies starting with Sunday's trip to FDU-Florham where the Devils posted a pair of walk-off wins in a doubleheader, including an 11-inning triumph. The next day,
Matt DeWald's walk-off single gave Delaware Valley a 7-6 home upset over 13
th-ranked Misericordia University.
Then came Wednesday and the final part of the three-game series with FDU-Florham. The two teams wound up combining for 21 runs, 28 hits, 12 walks and seven errors. The Aggies led 8-0 after two innings, blew the advantage, regained the lead at 9-8 and let that slip away. They then had to score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and won it on back-to-back, two-base errors.
After FDU-Florham tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the eighth, Delaware Valley went back ahead in the bottom half of the stanza on a suicide squeeze bunt by
Corey White that plated
Kyle Wenger. Back came the Devils in the ninth as two got on, were bunted over to second and third and both scored on Ben Dranow's single.
In the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter
Samuel Amos led off with a walk and
Jeremy Stewart followed with a single.
Harry Hancock came off the bench and successful bunted the runners over.
Kevin Crill was intentionally walked to load the bases and the next batter struck out. That brought Wenger to the plate and the preseason All-American worked the count full. Steven Smiegocki's next delivery was called a ball for a walk and a tied game.
FDU-Florham got its leadoff batter on base, but he was thrown out at second by pitcher
Casey Paholski on a bunt attempt. Paholski then retired the next two players to end the inning.
Delaware Valley saw its first batter ground out to start the bottom of the 10
th. DeWald then sent a grounder to the right side. It was field by the second baseman but there was confusion on who was going to catch the ball at the base and throw went astray and into the FDU-Florham dugout, allowing DeWald to move to second. Amos then hit a sharp grounder to shortstop and the throw sailed wide of first base, allowing DeWald to come around to score the game-winning tally.
Extra innings was a distance thought after Delaware Valley scored six runs in the first and two more in the second for an 8-0 lead. It had five hits in the first inning, including a two-run double by DeWald and a two-run triple by
Nate Cummings. DeWald added another RBI in the second as did
Austin Bregman.
The Devils chipped away at their deficit as they scored two runs in the third and three more in the fifth. They then pulled to within one thanks to two tallies in the seventh and tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single by Kevin Sinclair. That set the stage for the wild ending and the Aggie win.
Paholski picked up the win in two innings of relief. Bregman and Stewart had four hits apiece as part of the 16-hit, Delaware Valley attack. DeWald was 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs while Cummings and
Corey White had two RBIs apiece. Wenger went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Vinny Bonaccorso and Frankie Tassielli had three hits apiece for the Devils with Bonacccorso also knocked in two runs. Sinclair scored three times on a 2-for-3 effort. Smiegocki picked up the loss.
