Box Score 2 MADISON (NJ) – FDU-Florham notched walk-off wins in both contests as the Devils swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from visiting Delaware Valley University on Sunday, 4-3 and 10-9 (11 innings).
FDU-Florham improved to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in the Freedom while the Aggies fell to 6-12 and 0-7.
In the opener, Nick Meoli delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for the Devils' victory. Then in the nightcap, Delaware Valley scored in the top of the 11
th inning, but with the bases loaded and one out, Alex Geramita and James Dertouzos drew back-to-back walks to bring in the tying and winning runs.
The Aggies led 3-0 in the first game thanks to a run in the first and two more in the fourth. In the first,
Kevin Crill led off with a single and eventually scored on an error. In the fourth,
Jeremy Stewart scored on a wild pitch and Crill hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated
Nate Cummings.
However, FDU-Florham tied the contest with three runs in the fifth and won the game with Meoli's heroics in the seventh. Meoli was 2-for-4 and drove in all four runs for the Devils. Crill was 1-for-3 for the Aggies while
Austin Bregman added two hits.
Mike Kearney pitched six strong innings for Delaware Valley and
Ben Lippincott took the loss.
The wild nightcap saw the teams combine for 19 runs and 35 hits over the 11 innings. Delaware Valley led 6-1 after four and half innings before the Devils scored four in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 7-7 tie (the Aggies had added one in the top of the sixth).
The game went to extra innings and Delaware Valley took an 8-7 advantage in the top of the ninth as Crill,
Bobby Altieri and
Kyle Wenger drew consecutive walks with one out. Bregman hit a fly ball that scored Crill for the go-ahead run. However, FDU-Florham tied the contest in its half of the ninth on a RBI ground out by Geramita.
In the 11
th, Crill led off with a single and, after an out, Wenger drew a walk. Both moved up 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch and Bregman was then intentionally walked to load the bases.
Matt DeWald hit a ground ball to second and the Devils got one out but failed to turn the double play as Crill scored to give the Aggies a 9-8 lead. FDU-Florham rallied again and won it in the bottom of the inning as the Devils only had one hit, but three walks and a hit batsmen led to the loss.
Bregman was 4-for-5 with four RBIs while Wenger was 3-for-5 with a pair of triples, three runs scored and two RBIs. Crill was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI while DeWald knocked in two runs with a –for-7 effort. Wenger took the loss in relief.
Meoli was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs for the Devils, who used seven pitchers in the game.
