Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY (MD) – St. Mary's College scored 6:29 into overtime as the Seahawks opened the 2014 season with a 3-2 triumph over visiting Delaware Valley College.
In similar fashion to the 2013 opener which saw the Aggies kick off their record-breaking, 13-win season with a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Mary's at home, this year's version produced the same outcome with opposite results.
The Seahawks managed to get on the board just 14 seconds in when Olivia Edwards capitalized on a Carly Todd cross from the right side of the field. From there, the Aggies peppered St. Mary's goalie Christy Bishop with nine shots in the half. One of them got through as, with 5:25 left on the clock,
Taylor Prichett scored her first goal of the season off a loose ball scramble.
Jessica Summers was credited with the assist.
Just over 20 minutes into the second half, Delaware Valley took its first lead of the game when
Kelsey Zook fed
Stefania Swider at the top of the circle and she was able to beat the goalie with a shot to the far post.
The Aggies held onto to the lead until Edwards found the back of the cage for her second tally of the day with just 3:02 left in regulation.
In the extra session, it was St. Mary's Brady Wolf who was the hero as she scooped a shot past Delaware Valley goalkeeper
Emily Aldridge from the top of the circle for the 3-2 overtime victory.
The Aggies outshot the Seahawks, 18-15, for the game, but four of St. Mary's shot came in overtime, including the game-winning tally. Bishop recorded 10 saves in the game for the Seahawks while Aldridge notched eight of her own in her first collegiate start.
Lydia Spakosky got her first defensive save of the year for the Aggies.
