DELVAL BASEBALL SPLITS TWINBILL ON SENIOR DAY

DelVal seniors Kevin Cahill, Joe Gilbert, Brandon Bell, Jordan Heisler, Chad Schmuck and Pete O'Hara
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College celebrated Senior Day on Sunday and split a non-conference doubleheader with The City College of New York. The Aggies, behind a complete-game gem from senior Chad Schmuck, posted an 8-1 victory in the opener before the Beavers took a 3-1 decision in game two.

The split left Delaware Valley with a 14-19-1 record and the Aggies will conclude their 2014 season with a home twinbill against Valley Forge Christian College. CCNY moved its mark to 12-13-1.

Schmuck was one of six seniors honored between games as Brandon Bell, Kevin Cahill, Joe Gilbert, Jordan Heisler and Pete O'Hara were also recognized for their four years of service and dedication. The ceremony took place not long after Schmuck dominated the opener as the left-hander went the distance and allowed one unearned run and just hits. He walked two and fanned eight for his first win of the season and the 10th of his career.

CCNY got its run in the top of the first as Jhosse Estrella led off with a single, moved to third on a two-base error and scored on a wild pitch. However, that was the only base knock allowed by Schmuck until the sixth inning when Estrella singled again. At one point, Schmuck retired nine batters in a row in between walks in the first and fourth stanzas.

Delaware Valley answered right back with three runs off of two hits in the bottom of the first. O'Hara led off with a single to left field and then stole both second and third. Bell waked and freshman Kyle Wenger followed with a single to plate O'Hara. After sacrifice bunt by Corey White moved the runners up, Buhler knocked Bell in with a ground out. Wenger then stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

The Aggies added a tally in the second as Heisler left off with a base hit, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Delaware Valley then put the game away with four runs off of five hits and two CCNY errors in the fifth inning. With O'Hara on first, Bell executed a perfect hit-and-run as his double down the right field line was enough for O'Hara to come around to score for a 5-1 lead. Wenger singled and White was credited with one RBI as two scored on an error. After a double play cleared the bases, Matt DeWald ripped a triple to right-center and Heisler knocked in him with a single up the middle for an 8-1 advantage.

Bell, Heisler, O'Hara and Wenger had two hits apiece and the four combined to score seven runs and knock in three. Eestrella was 2-for-3 for the Beavers while Jeffrey Henriquez went two innings and took the loss.

Usually a reliever, Cahill got the starting nod for the Aggies in the nightcap and he permitted just two runs (one earned) and six hits in three-plus innings. However, the Beavers' Ara Aprahamian picked up a complete-game win as he gave up just one run on five hits.

CCNY took a 1-0 lead in the first as a sacrifice fly by Smith scored Estrella. It added another in the third on an RBI single by Gabriel Pena.

Delaware Valley got one back in its half of the third as O'Hara led off with a bunt, stole second and scored on Bell's single to left field. The Beavers regained the two-run lead in the fifth as Pena tripled and scored one batter later on another sacrifice fly by Smith. The Aggies brought the tying run to the plate in the fifth and the sixth but could not solve Aprahamian.
