Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – DeSales University remained in a tie for first place in the Freedom Conference as the Bulldogs opened its three-game series with Delaware Valley College with a 13-5 victory.
The win improved DeSales to 21-13 overall and 15-4 in conference games as the Bulldogs remained deadlocked with Misericordia atop the league standings and for the top seed in this year's upcoming Freedom Conference tournament. The loss dropped the Aggies to 13-16-1 overall and 5-14 in Freedom play.
Three of Delaware Valley's five runs came off the long ball. Junior
Matt DeWald hit a solo shot – his first of the season – to lead off the third inning while freshman
Kyle Wenger crushed a two-run bomb in ninth for his third round-tripper of the year.
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the top of the first as they manufactured a run on two hits with Tyler Sweeney crossing the plate on a double steal. They extended that lead by scoring five times in the third inning. They had seven hits in the stanza, including a two-run single by Charles Dennis and RBI base hits by Nrian Mauro and Alec Hardy. Nick Fisher added a sacrifice fly.
DeWald's leadoff homer in Delaware Valley's half of the third got one back. In the same inning,
Pete O'Hara later reached on an error by the third baseman and came around to score on a double to deep center field from Wenger to make it a 6-2 ballgame.
DeSales responded in the very next inning with two runs of its own. Tommy DePaul reached on a single and scored on a double from Mauro. Mauro came around to score on a two-out single by Mark Westdyk to put the Bulldogs back up by six. The Aggies managed to get one back in the bottom of the fourth when freshman
Bobby Altieri doubled to left-center field, scoring
Connor Buhler who was aboard on a leadoff single.
Delaware Valley failed to score again until the top of the ninth when Wenger jacked his two-run homer to deep center. Meanwhile, DeSales had scored three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits and one error and got two more in the seventh on two runs, two hits and an error for the 13-5 final.
Wenger was 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs for the Aggies while DeWald's homer was his lone hit in a 1-for-3 effort.
Jake Richard (3-4) started the game for the Aggies and pitched five-plus innings.
Chris Polaski (4-2) got the win for DeSales as he went five innings of seven-hit ball. He gave up three runs while striking out six. Eric Elmer took the hill for the final four frames, gave up just two runs on three hits while striking out three and earned a save.
DePaul had five hits in six plate appearances for DeSales. He also scored four runs. Mauro was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
