DELVAL BASEBALL HOLDS ON FOR 4-3 WIN OVER WILKES IN HOME OPENER

Box Score BASEBALL: Delaware Valley College 4, Wilkes University 3

WILKES-BARRE (PA) – Playing its first home game of the year and its first contest in 11 days, Delaware Valley College jumped out to a 4-1 lead and then survived a hectic ninth inning for a 4-3, Freedom Conference victory over Wilkes University.

The Aggies, who last took the diamond on March 22 due to multiple weather-related postponements, improved to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Colonels dropped a league game for the second straight day as they fell to 8-8 and 3-4.

Delaware Valley's first at-bat of the season at Frank Wolfgang Field was a memorable one as Pete O'Hara deposited the fourth pitch from Patrick Condo deep over the left field fence for his third home run of the season. The Aggies added another run in the first as Brandon Bell followed O'Hara's blast with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored easily when Corey White's fly ball to deep right-center was dropped.

Wilkes got a run back in the third as Ryan Herbst led off with a single and A.J. Mihaly reached on an error. They moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Herbst scored on a ground out by Matthew Reese.

It remained a one-run ballgame until the bottom of the seventh when the Aggies plated two for a 4-1 advantage. Bobby Altieri was hit by a pitch to begin the stanza. After an out, O'Hara ripped a triple to right-center to score Altieri. O'Hara then scored when Bell notched his second double of the game.

Delaware Valley was still up three going into the top of the ninth and reliever Jake Richard, who came in for starter Mike Kearney in the sixth, easily retired the first two batters. A single by James Brown and a walk to Tyler Marino brought the tying run to the plate. Herbst singled in Brown to make it 4-2 while Marino moved up to third on the play. Marcus Leaf came in to run for Herbst and promptly stole second. A walk loaded the bases and freshman Trevor Dalton came in to pitch for the Aggies. He walked pinch-hitter Bobby O'Keefe to make it 4-3, but then got Reese to fly out to right to end the game.

Kearney improved to 2-1 as he went five innings and allowed just one unearned run and three hits. Richard went three-plus innings while the save was the first of Dalton's collegiate career. O'Hara was 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Bell had two doubles in four at-bats while scoring once and driving in one.

Brown was 2-for-3 while Herbst was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Colonels. Condo allowed two runs and four hits in three innings and fell to 1-3 on the year.
