DELVAL BASEBALL FALLS IN SERIES OPENER TO MANHATTANVILLE

Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College dropped an 11-3 home decision in the opener of a three-game, Freedom Conference series with Manhattanville College. 
 
The Valiants improved to 14-11 overall and 8-7 in Freedom action while the Aggies fell to 11-13 and 5-11. The series concludes tomorrow in Purchase, New York with a doubleheader slated to start at 1:00.
 
Manhattanville got on the board first in the top of the second after consecutive doubles from Joe Anselmi and Bobby Guerra made it 1-0.  An error and an infield single loaded the bases for John Delahanty, who singled up the middle to plate two.  Kevin Brady scored Delahanty on a sacrifice fly to left field and the Valiants took a 4-0 lead. 
 
The next inning, Zach Kulikowski came on in relief for the Aggies and surrendered three runs on one hit and two errors as Delaware Valley fell behind 7-0.  Anselmi had an RBI single while Delahanty and Elias Tsouristakis picked up the other two RBIs in the frame
 
The Aggies responded in their half of the third as Pete O'Hara and Brandon Bell reached on singles and were eventually knocked in on a single by Kyle Wenger and a throwing error by the Valiants.
 
Both pitchers were solid from there and the score remained 7-2 until the sixth inning when Manhattanville scored two runs on one hit and one error in the top of the frame.  Delaware Valley got one back in the bottom of the sixth when Wenger led off with a triple to right center and came around to score on a Corey White RBI for a 9-3 contest.  The Valiants added two more in the top of the ninth on just one hit as they secured the 11-3 victory.
        
Wenger was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.  Kulikoswki pitched seven innings in relief giving up seven runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks.  Chad Schmuck was the starting pitcher and dropped to 0-4 on the season after surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk.
        
For Manhattanville, Alex Basso got the start and improved his record to 4-1 thanks to a seven-inning performance in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, no walks and 11 strike outs.  Anselmi had the best day at the plate going 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Delahanty knocked in four runs.
