Box Score 2 EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Wilkes University had a trio of five-run innings on the day as the host Colonels swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from Delaware Valley College, 10-2 and 6-4.
The wins improved Wilkes to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play. For the Aggies, who were playing their first games in seven days and their first contests up North after their Spring Break trip to Florida, the losses dropped them to 6-6 overall and 0-4 in the Freedom.
The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Colonels notched five unearned runs on six hits and a pair of Delaware Valley errors. The Aggies got two back in the fifth as
Connor Buhler doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Zach Kulikowski.
Pete O'Hara then followed with a solo home run, his second round-tripper of the year.
However, Wilkes put the game away with five runs on five hits in the sixth. The big blow was a two-out, three-run homer by Stephen Ruch. Ruch was a triple shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Patrick Condo picked up the win as he allowed two runs on six hits while fanning eight.
Buhler was 2-for-2 while O'Hara was 2-for-3 including the solo home run for the Aggies.
Jake Richard allowed eight runs (four earned) and struck out six in five-plus innings while taking the loss.
After the Colonels scored a run in the first on a bases-loaded walk, Delaware Valley took a 2-1 lead in the nightcap with a pair of tallies in the third. Kulikowski led off by reaching first on a wild pitch on third strike. O'Hara followed with a double to right-center and went to third on the throw as Kulikowski scored.
Brandon Bell then grounded out, but plated O'Hara with the go-ahead run.
Wilkes responded with five runs in the fourth inning as it racked up six hits in the stanza, including two-run singles by Ruch and Bobby Schappell. The Aggies made it a 6-4 contest in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by
Michael Anusky and an RBI double by
Matt DeWald. They had the tying runs in scoring position after DeWald's two-bagger, but could not score. They also brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh before a called third strike ended the game.
Ruch, Schappell and Tyler Marino knocked in two runs apiece for the Colonels. Chris Nixon got the win in relief while Matt Kaster earned the save.
Corey White had the lone multiple-hit game for the Aggies as he was 2-for-3.
Trevor Dalton fell to 2-1 on the year as the freshman allowed five runs and six hits in two-plus inning of work.
