Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH (SC) – The Delaware Valley College softball team, under new head coach
Corey Heulitt opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses on its Spring Break to South Carolina. The Aggies dropped an 8-3 decision to SUNY-Institute of Technology and followed with a 9-5 setback to Dakota State University.
The first game of Monday was the season debut for both squads. For Delaware Valley, senior and two-time all-Freedom Conference honoree
Jackie Wear got the team its first run of the year with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Wear was 2-for-3 in the game.
The Aggies trailed 2-1 at the point before SUNY-IT put four on the board in the fifth game to take control. Freshman
Sydney Edwards notched her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, in the sixth for Delaware Valley's final runs. Edwards was 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut.
Junior
Alexis Boucher pitched five innings and took the loss while senior
Whitney Stacey pitched the final two stanzas. The two combined for five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Aggies took a 2-0, first-inning lead on a two-run single by senior
Loran Mihaliak. Dakota State answered with three in the third and two in the fourth for a 5-2 advantage. Delaware Valley scored three times on a Trojans' error in the top of the fifth to tie the game but Dakota State regained the lead for good with four runs in its half of the inning.
Mihaliak was 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Wear and fellow senior
Tori Stachura were each 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior
Magen Majeski took the loss. Erica Bell and Kelly Heisler combined for six hits and four RBIs for Dakota State.
