Box Score DALLAS (PA) – Delaware Valley College's run to its first Freedom Conference women's soccer tournament berth since 2008 came to an end on Wednesday evening as the Aggies dropped a 6-0, semifinal decision to two-time defending league champion and nationally-ranked Misericordia University.
Delaware Valley, with no seniors on the roster, was picked last in the preseason coaches' poll, but played its way to a number three seed thanks to a 3-3-1 regular-season conference record. The semifinal setback dropped its final record to 6-11-2.
For the Cougars, who went to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2012 and the Sweet 16 last year, the win improved the number 15 team in the country to 16-2-1 overall. They will head to top-seeded DeSales University for the Freedom Conference Championship Game and an automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs on Saturday, November 8. The two played to a 2-2 tie last week and DeSales earned the number one seed for the tournament due to tiebreakers.
Misericordia took command from the opening whistle as the squad recorded its first shot just seven seconds in and it almost found it way in the top right corner of the net. The Cougars had 10 shots in the first 17 minutes and then earned a corner shortly after. All-American Megan Mahoney sent the corner kick to the far side of the box and Alex Gallagher was there to put it in with 27:43 left in the half.
The Aggies came right down the field after the goal and recorded their first shot as
Karla Keler's boot was stopped by Maureen Ciccosanti. Back came Misericordia and Mahoney set up Gallagher again for a 2-0 advantage with 26:11 to go.
The Cougars then got two goals from Meghan Antrim in four-minute span for a 4-0 lead. Her first came off a rebound off the crossbar while the second was assisted by Mahoney.
Misericordia then got its final two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half. Both were by Mahoney, who, earlier in the day, was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year for the second season in a row. She finished the night with two goals and three assists for seven points.
Delaware Valley had three shots in the second half as
Elisha Taney,
Mary Taylor and
Kylie Williams had the attempts. Two were stopped by backup goalie Alyssa Pojero while the other was blocked in front of the net.
The Cougars finished with 43 shots in the game, including 30 in the first half.
Claudia Winters played the first 45 minutes in net and was credited with eight saves while
Kelly Quinn had four stops in the second half.
