Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Jessica Summers scored with just two seconds left in the first half and goalkeeper
Emily Aldridge made it stand for her fourth shutout of the year as Delaware Valley College remained alive in the Freedom Conference tournament hunt with a 1-0 triumph over visiting Eastern University.
It was the Aggies' first-ever victory over the perennial conference power and they improved to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in league play. It was a must-win for Delaware Valley and the team will now watch two Freedom games slated for later this evening. If both go the Aggies' way (Misericordia over Wilkes and DeSales over King's), then they would still be alive for a postseason spot when they host Wilkes University for Thursday's regular-season finale. -
NOTE 9:00 p.m. - Wilkes defeated Misericordia to clinch the final Freedom tournament berth In the first half, Delaware Valley applied the pressure offensively and earned six penalty corners in a three-minute span, the first coming with 7:23 left on the clock. The Aggies registered four shots off those opportunities but failed to convert.
Then, with 1:16 remaining in the half, Delaware Valley's offense charged down the field again and got off four shots. The third was an in-tight attempt from
Taylor Prichett that was stopped on the goal line by Eagles defender Megan Bolton. However, the rebound fell right to Summers who put it home with just two seconds left on the clock. It was the senior's fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Eastern (7-11, 2-5) earned a corner at 11:54 and fed the ball to its leading scorer in Bolton. She registered three shots in a 10-second span, but Aldridge was equal to the task to keep the Aggies in front.
Delaware Valley's offense kept up the pressure from there until the waning seconds of regulation when the Eagles raced down the field for one last strike. Jess Kinzler appeared to be free on a breakaway until Delaware Valley's
Lydia Spakosky tracked her down from behind and jarred the ball of her stick as time expired.
Aldridge made eight saves in the contest with Eastern registering 10 shots and five penalty corners. The Aggies fired 28 shots in the game and had 15 corner opportunities while Jennifer O'Neill made 15 saves for the Eagles.
