Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – DeSales University scored two goals in a 108-second span in the second half, en route to a 3-0, Freedom Conference triumph over host Delaware Valley College.
The victory improved the Bulldogs to 8-5-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the league. They are tied with defending champion and nationally-ranked Misericordia University atop the standings. Those two play in the regular-season finale next week.
Meanwhile, the Aggies dropped the Aggies to 5-9-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Freedom. However, despite the loss, they are still in third place in the standings with two games remaining, a road contest at King's College this Saturday, October 25 and a home encounter with FDU-Florham next Saturday, November 1. The top four teams qualify for the conference tournament.
There were not a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half but DeSales had one with 13:05 left as Gabby Lucchese had a step on the Delaware Valley defenders. However, goalkeeper
Kelly Quinn came out and stopped a shot with her legs.
The Aggies then nearly had a goal in the closing seconds of the first half.
Karla Keler sent a shot from the left side that had the goalie beat, but hit the crossbar. It stayed in play and it wound up in front of the net at the feet of Delaware Valley's
Kylie Williams. Her shot went high and hit the football upright above the soccer net. The officials ruled that a DeSales player touched it last so the Aggies hurried to get a corner kick off with less than 10 seconds to go.
Mary Taylor's corner was headed by
ZuZu Cooper in the box, but Bulldogs' goalkeeper Michelle Churchman was there to stop it and keep the game scoreless.
Delaware Valley had early pressure in the second half, but could not capitalize. Then just over 16 minutes into the stanza, DeSales' Angelica Bertola sent a beautiful cross into the box and Jamie Barna was there to head it in for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs came right back and scored with 26:31 remaining as Jessica Wetherhold got to a loose ball at the top of the circle and sent a low shot that beat the goalie. DeSales upped its lead to 3-0 when Danni Engwall blasted home a shot with 9:29 left on the clock.
The Bulldogs held a 20-11 advantage in shots while the Aggies had a 7-3 edge in corners. Churchman stopped five shots for the shutout while Quinn played 80-plus minutes and had seven saves for Delaware Valley.
