DELVAL WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS HOMECOMING WEEKEND WITH 2-0 LOSS TO NO. 16 MISERICORDIA

Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College battled two-time defending Freedom Conference champion and 16th-ranked Misericordia University all evening before suffering a 2-0, setback on Homecoming Weekend.

The Cougars improved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action while the Aggies fell to 3-8-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.

Misericordia went to the Division III Final Four just two seasons ago and reached the Sweet 16 last year. Part of their 2013 run was an 8-0 victory over Delaware Valley.

Fast forward to this season and the Aggies played a defensive strategy while hoping for one of two quick breaks on offense. The ploy kept the team in the contest despite an early goal just 8:17 in as All-American Megan Mahoney sent a pass right in front to Erin McGreal, who notched her fifth goal of the season.

It remained 1-0 for the next 32-plus minutes until Mahoney received a long pass from Kylen Smith and headed it in for her ninth goal of the year. The tally came with 4:08 left in the first half a half that saw the Cougars hold a 14-0 edge in shots but just a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.

Delaware Valley then kept Misericordia scoreless in the second half, despite 22 shots. Ten of those attempts were on net and were all stopped by freshman Kelly Quinn, who was making just her second collegiate appearance in goal. Quinn finished the night with 15 saves.

The Aggies had two shots in the contest, both coming in the 7:33. The second nearly found the back of the net as, with 2:49 to go, Mary Taylor launched a long blast that was headed for the top corner. However, Cougar goalkeeper Maureen Ciccosanti deflected it high and off the football uprights for a corner kick. Delaware Valley was unable to convert the corner and the game ended with the 2-0 final.
