LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 3-2 FIELD HOCKEY LOSS TO ALVERNIA

Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Margaret Wentzel scored two goals and visiting Alvernia University held off a late Delaware Valley College flurry for a 3-2, non-conference win.

The Crusaders improved to 6-4 on the year while the Aggies, who were playing their first home game in 17 days, dropped to 5-6 overall.

Delaware Valley got off to a quick start and went up 1-0 when Carlie Baldus took a pass from Jessica Summers just inside the top right part of the circle and blasted a shot into the low left corner. The goal was the freshman's third of the season at it came just under eight minutes in the contest.

Alvernia tied it up with 12:54 to go in the opening half as Emily Kelly sent a pass through two Aggie defenders and onto the stick of Wentzel. She broke free from a defender and put one past Delaware Valley goalkeeper Emily Aldridge.

The Crusaders then scored two times in a 12-minute span in the second half to take a 3-1 lead. Kelly picked up another assist as she put a ball toward the cage and Natalie Messaros was there to tip it in with 18:56 left on the clock. The next tally was all Wentzel as she dribbled down the field, went past two defenders, pulled up and connected for her 12th goal of the season.

The Aggies made things interesting just 75 seconds after Wentzel's second tally as they got a corner opportunity and the ball its way to Taylor Prichett. She drove a shot from the top left of the circle and Summers was there in front of the goal to tip it in for her third tally of the year.

Summers' goal came with 4:57 to go and Delaware Valley pressed for the game-tying mark. The squad had two corners in the final minute and the ball was in the circle as the final seconds were ticking off, but they could not muster a final shot or even another corner opportunity and Alvernia came away with the win

The Crusaders had a 15-10 advantage in shots while both teams had eight corners. Aldridge and Alvernia keeper Erin Wunsch had six saves apiece in the contest.
