Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Catcher Ricky Gathen hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lift FDU-Florham to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
The Aggies (12-13, 3-9 Freedom) trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when they scored three times to tie it. Mike Anusky had a one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by
Brandon Bell. After a second out,
Jordan Heisler doubled to put runners on second and third.
Andrew Welch then delivered a single that plated both Bell and Heisler for a 3-3 ballgame.
It was still tied going into the bottom of the eighth as Anusky led off with a triple and Bell and
Zach Kulikowski each walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice out at the plate, Welch grounded to short. The Devils tried to pull off the double play, but couldn't do so and Bell scored for a 4-3 Delaware Valley lead.
In the top of the ninth, Nick Core led off with a triple to straightaway center field. That brought Gathen to the plate and he deposited the first he saw over the left field fence to give FDU-Florham (11-12, 7-5) a 5-4 advantage. It was his first hit of the day and his third home run of the season.
The first two Aggie batters were retired in the bottom of the ninth before
Pete O'Hara drew a walk. The junior entered the game with 16 stolen bases in 18 attempts and he tried to get in scoring position, but Gathen gunned him down on a bang-bang play at second to end the contest.
The Devils got their first runs of the game in the first inning on an RBI triple by Brandan Adams and a sacrifice fly by Frank LaGuarina. They added a tally in the sixth on a wild pitch. Delaware Valley rallied from there, setting up Gathen's heroics in the ninth.
Adams, Core and Nick Meoli had two hits apiece for FDU-Florham. Jeff Jacobs started and went seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out six. Ryan Thurnes picked up the win.
Welch was 1-for-3 and knocked in three runs for the Aggies. Anusky was 2-for-2 while Benn was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Chad Schmuck started and allowed two runs and three hits in four innings.
Chris Kelly took the loss in relief.
