Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Wilkes University received strong pitching performances from Patrick Condo and Brandon Carling as the Colonels completed a three-game, Freedom Conference series sweep of host Delaware Valley College, 2-0 and 7-2.
Wilkes improved to 18-11 overall and 9-9 in the Freedom while the Aggies saw their marks drop to 16-18 and 4-14.
Condo (3-1) hurled a five-hit shutout while fanning five in the opener. Meanwhile, Carling (2-0) went six innings in the second game and allowed just two runs and seven hits while striking out seven.
The first game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Nick Craig led off with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Bobby Schappell then singled up the middle to bring in Craig for the 1-0 lead. The Colonels added an insurance tally in the sixth on an RBI single by Tyler Marino that plated Stephen Ruch, who led off with a walk.
Delaware Valley threatened in the bottom of the sixth as
Jeff Sennett (hit batsman) and
Pete O'Hara (single) reached base to start the stanza. However, Condo fielded a bunt attempt and threw out Sennett at third. Condo then struck out the next two batters to end the threat, and retired the Aggies in order in the seventh for the win.
Cody Hudnall had a strong pitching performance in the loss as he went seven innings and allowed just two runs and six hits. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate as was O'Hara.
The teams traded runs early in the nightcap with the Aggies' tally coming in the second on an RBI ground out by
Andrew Welch. However, Wilkes took command of the game with a five-run, fifth inning that featured four hits and one costly Delaware Valley error. Joe Dantas had the big blow with a two-run double. Both teams scored one more run with
Connor Buhler delivering an RBI single in the sixth for the Aggies.
Dantas was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Wilkes.
Brandon Bell had two hits and two runs scored while O'Hara and
Michael Anusky were each 2-for-3 for Delaware Valley.
Chad Schmuck pitched four-plus innings and took the loss.
