DELVAL BASEBALL OPENS SEASON WITH TWINBILL SPLIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLENSIDE (PA) – Delaware Valley College opened the 2013 baseball season by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with host Arcadia University. The Aggies took the opener, 5-4, but dropped a 4-3, eight-inning contest in the nightcap.

Delaware Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as it racked up two hits and took advantage of a pair of Arcadia miscues. Cody Hudnall had the lone RBI of the stanza with a run-scoring single. Brandon Bell then made it 4-0 thanks to an RBI single in the second.

The Knights (2-2) tied it up with three runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third. Michael Nessell had the big blow with a bases-clearing triple in the second.

The game was still 4-4 with two outs in the top of the sixth. Pete O'Hara then ripped a double for his third hit of the game. Bell followed with a single to score the speedy O'Hara for a 5-4 Delaware Valley lead. O'Hara was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Bell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Freshman Chris Kelly made that stand as his first collegiate appearance was a memorable one. He pitched three innings and did not allow a run not or hit while fanning six. Kelly picked up the win in relief of Chad Schmuck who went the first four innings and allowed three earned run and five hits while striking out six.

In the nightcap, it was a 1-0 contest through five innings with Arcadia picking up the only run in the first inning. The Knights added two more in the bottom of the sixth as Nick Petroski had an RBI single and an Aggie error led to another run.

Delaware Valley fought back in their final at-bat and scored three times in the seventh. Jeff Sennett and Jordan Heisler had back-to-back singles and, after an out, Mike Kearney smacked a double to score Sennett and move Heisler to third. Pinch-hitter Tim Adams grounded out to third, but the Arcadia first baseman committed an error after the out and both Heisler and Kearney scored to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
However, Arcadia loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an error and two hit batsmen. The Knights then scored the winning run on a fielder's choice to get the twinbill split.

Hudnall started the game for Delaware Valley and allowed just one run and one hit over five innings. He walked two and struck out four. Jake Richard took the loss in relief. Five different Aggies had one hit in the second game.
