Bob Altieri became the all-time wins leader in Delaware Valley College baseball history as he received six shutouts inning from both
Chad Schmuck and
Mike Kearney in a doubleheader sweep of Bethany College, 2-0 and 3-0.
The Aggies improved to 6-5 on the season and moved Altieri to the top of the charts. A 1992 graduate of the institution and a member of its Hall of Fame as a player, Altieri has compiled a 251-232-1 record along with seven playoff appearances and one ECAC championship in 13-plus years at the helm. He surpassed his coach and current athletic director Frank Wolfgang, who amassed 249 wins in his 22-year career.
Schmuck allowed just six hits in the opener as he improved to 2-0 on the year. He walked two batters and struck out six. Freshman
Chris Kelly then came in and pitched a perfect seventh, including a strikeout, for his first collegiate save. Delaware Valley got all the offense it needed in the second when
Jim Calabrese had an RBI double. The last run came in the third on a wild pitch.
Kearney also moved his record to 2-0 as he permitted hits and two walks while fanning three. Kelly then made it 2-for-2 in save situations. Calabrese scored on a wild pitch in the third for a 1-0 lead. He then ripped a two-run single in the fourth to score
Jordan Heisler and
Cody Hudnall. Calabrese was 2-for-3 in the game as was
Zach Kulikowski.
The Aggies will wrap up play in the Sunshine State with a morning contest against Hilbert College on Saturday.
