DELVAL FIELD HOCKEY SEASON TO REMEMBER COMES TO AN END IN ECAC SEMIFINALS

UNION (NJ) – The Delaware Valley College field hockey teams saw its historical season come to an end as the sixth-seeded Aggies dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Championships.

For head coach Carol Di Girolamo and her squad, it was the conclusion of a year that saw the team set a program record for overall wins with 13 (13-8) as well as victories in Freedom Conference play with five (5-2). They were the top seed and hosted a Freedom tournament game for the first time, and were then selected to the ECACs for the first timed in program history. Wednesday's 4-3 overtime triumph at No. 3 Richard Stockton marked another first as it was the team's first postseason victory. DiGirolamo earned Freedom Coach of the Year honors and five of her Aggies were recognized with all-conference honors.

Stevens improved to 14-7 and advanced to Sunday's ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championship Game where the Ducks will meet eighth-seeded Alvernia University, which upset No. 4 Kean University in the other semifinal match-up.

Stevens scored two goals less than seven minutes apart in the first half for the early advantage. First it was Dailyn Brook, who dribbled down the left side of the field and took a shot that deflected off a defender and into the cage with 11:58 off the clock. Six minutes and 17 seconds later, Rachel Chavez was sprung into the Aggie zone. Her first shot hit the post and the next was stopped by Aggie goalie Sandra Edwards. Chavez got another crack at it and finally put the ball into the back of the cage.

It remained a two-goal contest under just under five minutes into the second half when the Ducks extended their lead. Marguerite Chavez dribbled across the goal mouth and buried a shot from 10 yards out to go up 3-0.

Delaware Valley had a corner opportunity with less than five minutes remaining and it took advantage of it. First team all-Freedom Conference forward Taylor Prichett Prichett sent the ball to the top of the circle where Kelsey Zook blasted a shot that was blocked by a defender. The rebound found its way to Prichett at the side of the cage and she capitalized for her 22nd goal of the year and the lone tally of the day for the Aggies.

Stevens outshot the Aggies in the first half, 10-6, and held a 21-16 advantage for the game. Both teams had just three corner attempts apiece. Edwards played all 70 minutes in goal for Delaware Valley and the senior registered nine saves in her final collegiate contest. Emily Stukenborg made eight saves in 62 minutes between the pipes for the Ducks and Felicia Heard played the final eight.
