DELVAL FIELD HOCKEY STAYS IN TIE FOR FIRST AFTER 2-1 WIN AT WILKES

Box Score EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Saturday began with a five-way tie for first place in the Freedom Conference. By the end of the day, three were still atop the standings and Delaware Valley College was one of them thanks to 2-1, road triumph over Wilkes University.

The win was the 10th overall for the Aggies (10-5) as the 2013 squad tied the mark of six others for the third-highest win total in a season. They trail only the 2001 and 2007 editions which each went 12-8.

More importantly, the win over the Lady Colonels (3-11, 1-3 Freedom) improved Delaware Valley to 3-1 in conference play. The Aggies are tied with DeSales University and Misericordia University for first place while FDU-Florham (Delaware Valley's next opponent – October 23 at home) and Manhattanville College are a game behind. Five-time defending Freedom champion Eastern University, 2012 runner-up King's College and Wilkes are at 1-3. Three games remain in the regular-season and the top four teams advance to the Freedom Conference tournament, a spot Delaware Valley has been in three of the last four years.

The Aggies needed just eight minutes and 10 seconds to hit the scoreboard and it was the power combination of Taylor Prichett and Jessica Summers that made it happen. Summers had a shot that was stopped, but Prichett got the ball and put it in for her 17th tally of the season. The assist for Summers was the junior's 11th as she tied the school's single-season record that was set by Bethany Pavlik five seasons ago.

Delaware Valley made it 2-0 with 11:01 remaining in the first half as Sarah Cvach connected on a shot from the top of the circle. It was the junior's first collegiate goal.

Wilkes cut the lead in half just six minutes into the second stanza as Emily Saliba's initial shot was stopped, but she got the rebound and scored. The Lady Colonels put pressure on late in the game, including a shot that got past Aggie goalkeeper Sandra Edwards. However, Maddie Raville was there for the big defensive save and Delaware Valley came away with the big conference win.

The Aggies outshot Wilkes, 24-10, including 12-3 advantage in a dominant first half. They also had an 11-5 edge in corners. Edwards made five saves for the win while Alexis Reed was strong at the other end and ended the contest with 14 stops.
