WALK-OFF DRAMATICS GIVES EASTERN TWINBILL SWEEP OF DELVAL

ST. DAVIDS (PA) – A pair of walk-off singles gave host Eastern University a stunning, Freedom Conference doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley College on Monday. The Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 triumph in the opener, and followed with two runs in the eighth inning of the nightcap for another 8-7 score.

The wins improved Eastern to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference. The Aggies fell to 10-14 and 3-9.

In the opener, Delaware Valley had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh, Jeff Sennett and Dan Hrubos had back-to-back RBI singles to break a 5-5 tie. However, Eastern responded in its half of the stanza by loading the bases with nobody out thanks to a hit batsman, an Aggie error and an infield single. Scott Renauro drew a walk to make it a 7-6 contest and it brought Dave Prager to the plate. He ripped a pitch to left-center field that brought in two runs for the 8-7, come-from-behind win. It was Prager's lone hit of the contest in a 1-for-4 effort.

The teams traded runs in the first (Delaware Valley on an RBI single by Matt Bodine) before the Aggies put four on the board in the second. Hrubos had a two-run single while Jake Barben and Bodine delivered run-scoring singles. Eastern rallied to tie it in the fifth with four runs on three hits and an Aggie miscue. That set the stage for the wild seventh inning.

Hrubos was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Bodine went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Pete O'Hara had two hits and scored three runs. Chad Schmuck allowed three earned runs in six innings while Mike Ferrier took the loss.

The nightcap went extra innings and Delaware Valley struck in the top of the eighth as Ferrier singled and moved to second on an Eastern error on the play. He then stole third and later scored on a Hrubos double to left field.

However, the Eagles responded as Andre Butler led off with a walk. Following an out, Butler then stole second and scored the tying run as Prager came through again, this time an RBI double.  Following an intentional walk, Devon Ziegenfuss singled and Prager came around to score the winning tally. Prager was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Ziegenfuss was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Delaware Valley jumped out quickly with four runs in the top of the first, including RBI singles by Hrubos, Sennett and Mike Otstot. Eastern got one back in its half, but the Aggies responded in the second as a Cory Weingart sacrifice fly brought home Jim Calabrese. Eastern then took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the third and one more in the fourth. Delaware Valley tied it up in the fifth as Otstot delivered a run-scoring double. Neither team scored in the next two innings, setting up the extra-inning finish.

Hrubos was 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Otstot had a 2-for-3 showing and drove in two runs. Tyler Frounfelker took the loss in relief of Cody Hudnall.
