DELVAL SPLITS TWINBILL AT WILKES

EDWARDSVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College's run at the fourth and final Freedom Conference playoff spot came to an end on Saturday as the Aggies split a twinbill with host Wilkes University. They took the opening contest, 10-1, but dropped a 7-3 decision in the nightcap.

Delaware Valley College (16-20, 8-13) entered the day one game behind both Eastern University and Manhattanville College for the postseason berth and the two squads had games against the two teams tied for first in the conference in Misericordia University and DeSales University.

The opening slates saw Manhattanville upset DeSales, leaving the Valiants one game ahead of Delaware Valley and Eastern (which fell to Misericordia). With the Aggies holding the tiebreaker with Manhattanville, they knew a game two win and losses by Eastern and Manhattanville would put them in the playoffs. Those two fell, but Delaware Valley could not get past Wilkes (13-26, 4-17). Thus, the Aggies will wrap up the 2012 campaign at home on Sunday when they host St. Mary's College (Md) for a non-conference doubleheader.

The afternoon started out strong for Delaware Valley as it put five runs on the board in the opening inning of the first contest. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out and Matt Bodine followed with a two-run single to center. Jeff Sennett knocked in a run on a fielder's choice, and Mike Ferrier blasted a two-run homer of the left field fence for the 5-0 advantage.

Delaware Valley added to its lead in the fourth as a Colonel error allowed Mike Otstot to score. Otstot opened the inning with a single. Wilkes got on the board in its half of the inning as A.J. Mihaly drew a bases-loaded walk. However, the Aggies responded with four runs in the sixth thanks to two-run doubles by Dan Hrubos and Bodine.

Hrubos finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Bodine was 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Ferrer was 1-for-3 and knocked in two. Chad Schmuck (4-2) went the distance and allowed just one while striking out a career-best 10.

The second game saw Wilkes score two runs in both the first and second innings for the early 4-0 advantage. Delaware Valley rallied in the third as Jim Calabrse and Otstot drew walks and Hrubos brought them home with his seventh triple of the year. That moved the senior into a tie for third place on the school's single-season list for triples. Hrubos then scored on an RBI single by Cory Weingart to make it a one-run ballgame.

It remained 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth when the Colonels notched three runs on three hits and two Aggie errors. Matt Ruch and Dan Pisanchyn had RBI singles to highlight the inning for Wilkes. Sennett opened the seventh with a single, but the next three batters grounded out to end the contest.

Ruch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Joe Dantas went 2-for-3 and scored three runs for the Colonels. Sean Flecknoe pitched six innings for his second win of the year. Sennett went 2-for-3 for Delaware Valley while Hrubos finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Cody Hudnall fell to 4-2 with the loss.
