DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College's
Jeff Sennett had a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one while FDU-Florham's Frank LaGuarina smacked a pair of home runs in the nightcap as the two teams split a Freedom Conference doubleheader. Final scores were 11-10 in the opener and 10-4 in the second contest.
The split left the Aggies with a 14-18 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the Freedom. They are two games behind Eastern University and Manhattanville College, which are both 8-10, for the fourth and final conference playoff berth. Delaware Valley ends its league regular season with a three-game series with last-place Wilkes University while Eastern and Manhattanville each have to battle a team that is tied for first (Eastern vs Misericordia University and Manhattanville vs DeSales).
FDU-Florham, which clinched a Freedom playoff berth with Friday's series-opening win over the Aggies, saw its mark go 17-15 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
The opener was a wild, three-hour contest that featured 21 run, 26 hits and 19 walks. Delaware Valley erased an early 2-0 deficit (FDU-Florham's two runs were on a home run by Ryan Fandel) by scoring five times thanks to five hits in the second inning. The big blows were an RBI double by
Cory Weingart and a two-run triple by
Pete O'Hara. The team then added a run in third as
Mike Ferrier's double brought home Weingart, who reached base with a single.
FDU-Florham made it a one-run ballgame in the top of the fifth as Nick Marcucci blasted a three-run homer to straightaway center field (400 feet). Delaware Valley countered with a tally in the bottom of the stanza and
Jake Barben led off with a bomb over the right-centerfield fence.
The two teams then combined for seven runs in the sixth inning, including four by the Devils as they trailed 10-9 with one inning to play. Nick Core had the key hit for FDU-Florham thanks to a two-run double.
Jim Calabrese had an RBI single for the Aggies and
Dan Hrubos followed with a two-run homer to regain the advantage.
In the top of the seventh, three straight walks loaded the bases with nobody out for the Devils. Matt Joiner connected for a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Delaware Valley had a chance in the bottom of the inning as it loaded the bases with two outs, but a ground out ended the threat.
Sennett pitched the eighth inning for the Aggies and got out of a minor jam. In the bottom of the eighth, Weingart reached on a one-out single and then moved all the way to third on a wild pitch as the catcher lost sight of where the ball was. That brought Sennett to the plate and he singled past a drawn-in infield for the walk-off hit and the win on the mound.
Weingart was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Calabrese, Hrubos and O'Hara had two RBIs apiece. Marcucci was 1-for-2 with his three-run homer while Core, Fandel and Joiner knocked in two runs apiece for the Devils. Chris Laudati took the loss.
The second game saw FDU-Florham take a 3-0 advantage with a run in the first and two in the second. The Aggies tied it in the bottom of the second as, after two players were hit by a pitch, Ferrier drilled a home run over the left field fence.
The Devils regained the advantage in the third on an RBI single by Fandel, but Delaware Valley answered in the fourth as Calabrese had a run-scoring double.
FDU-Florham took the lead for good in the fifth as LaGuarina led off the inning with a home run over the center field fence. The team added another run in the inning on an RBI single by Frankie Tassielli. Delaware Valley threatened in the bottom of the inning as O'Hara led off with a double and Weingart followed with a walk. With the count at 3-2 and the runners in motion, Hrubos drilled a line drive, but it was right to the second baseman and the Devils turned the triple play.
The Devils then put the contest away with four runs in the seventh, including another bomb by LaGuarina. LaGuarina finished 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs. Robbie Drexel went five innings and improved to 5-0 on the mound.
The Aggies had five players with one hit apiece, including Ferrier who was 1-for-3 with the three-run homer.
Jordan Heisler took the loss in relief.
