AGGIES FALL IN EXTRA INNINGS

MADISON (NJ) – A wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed the winning run to score as FDU-Florham opened a three-game, Freedom Conference set with a 4-3 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College.

The Devils improved to 16-14 overall and 11-5 in the Freedom while the loss dropped the Aggies to 13-17 and 5-11. The two will meet in Doylestown for a doubleheader on Saturday (please note: the starting time for the games have been moved up an hour from noon to 11:00 a.m.).

Delaware Valley struck right away in the contest as a Pete O'Hara singled, a Cory Weingart walk and a Dan Hrubos hit batsman loaded the bases with nobody out. Jake Barben then singled down the right field line to bring in O'Hara and Weingart for a 2-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Matt Bodine led off with a walk and advance to second on a single by Jeff Sennett. The two moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Bodine scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Otstot to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Jim Calabrese was cruising on the mound as he allowed just three hits through the first seven innings and, at one point, had retired 15 consecutive batters. However in the eighth inning, FDU-Florham notched three consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. Those three players then scored on a sacrifice fly, a ground out and an Aggie error.

Delaware Valley got the potential go-ahead run on third base with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a ground out ended the threat. The Devils had a two-out double go to waste in the bottom of the stanza and the game was headed to extra innings.

Dan Hrubos led off the top of the 10th with a single, but he was picked off for the first out of the inning. Barben reached on an error, moved to second on a Bodine single and then went to third on a fielder's choice. The threat ended when Mike Ferrier struck out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Frankie Tassielli opened with a single and moved all the way to third following a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. Aggie reliever Jordan Heisler then threw a pitch that got away and Tassielli came in with the winning run.

Calabrese got the no-decision as he went nine innings and allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits while fanning six. Barben was 2-for-5 with two RBIs while O'Hara went 3-for-5 with a stole base and a run scored.

Tassielli paced the FDU-Florham offense with a 2-for-4 effort and two runs scored. FJ Lucchetti started and went six innings while Mike Winters picked up the win in relief.
