PURCHASE (NY) – Delaware Valley College racked up 17 runs and 22 hits as the Aggies swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Manhattanville College, 8-6 and 9-5.
Delaware Valley improved to 13-15 overall and 5-10 in the conference while the Valiants, who won the series opener on the road on Friday, fell to 12-14 and 6-9.
The Aggies put runs on the board in each of the first four innings in the opener to build a 7-2 lead. In the first,
Dan Hrubos knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly while
Matt Bodine's first of four hits was an RBI double.
Pete O'Hara delivered a run-scoring single in the second while
Jake Barben and
Mike Ferrier had RBI doubles in the third with an RBI ground out by
Jeff Sennett sandwiched in-between. Then in the fourth, Bodine came through with an RBI single. The Valiants' two runs were in the bottom of the first on hits by Chris Nardozzi and Sean Ferguson.
Delaware Valley made it an 8-2 contest in the top of the sixth as
Matt Bodine went deep for the team's first home run of the season. Manhattanville made it a ballgame thanks to four runs on six hits in the bottom of the stanza. The Valiants then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Aggie starter
Chad Schmuck got a called third strike on Bobby Guerra for the win. Schmuck improved to 3-2 on the season.
Bodine finished a perfect 4-for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle. He scored two runs and knocked in three. Barben was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while
Mike Ferrier was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. O'Hara went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Ferguson and Nardozzi each had two hits and two RBIs for Manhattanville. Alex Basso went just two-plus innings and took the loss.
The second game saw Delaware Valley trail 2-1 after two innings with its lone run coming in the first O'Hara was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an RBI single by
Dan Hrubos. The Aggies then took the lead for good with three runs in both the third and fourth stanza. An error, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly (Ferrier) brought in the tallies in the third while Hrubos smacked a three-run homer to right-center field in the fourth.
Manhattanville got to within two at 7-5 with run in the fifth and two in the sixth. However, the Aggies put some insurance runs on the board in the seventh as Ferrier singled in a run and
Cory Weingart drew a bases-loaded walk.
Cody Hudnall improved to 4-1 on the year as he permitted five runs (three earned) and eight hits over the seven innings. Hrubos was 2-for-4 with the home run and four RBIs. Ferrier was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Kevin Brady was the lone Valiant to have a multiple-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Pat Yanucci went three-plus inning and suffered the setback.
