CENTER VALLEY (PA) – DeSales University completed a three-game, Freedom Conference sweep of Delaware Valley College by notching a pair of home wins on Saturday, 1-0 and 6-5.
David Drinks was the story of the first game for the Bulldogs (10-6, 5-1) as he pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout. The lone Aggie hit came in the first inning when
Jeff Sennett hit a ball deep in the hole at shortstop and beat the throw to first. Drinks walked one and fanned three in the game.
The loss spoiled the effort on the mound by sophomore
Chad Schmuck for the Aggies (7-8, 0-5). One day earlier, DeSales had notched 26 runs and 27 hits in a series opener, but Schmuck limited the Bulldogs to just one run and eight hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six.
The lone run in the opener was notched in the bottom of the fifth inning when Justin Scerbo led off with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and crossed home plate on an RBI single to right field by Kenny Ridge. Ridge was 2-for-2 in the game.
In the second game, DeSales scored two runs in both the first and second innings for an early 4-0 advantage. Ethan Moser had a sacrifice fly while Jason Hadinger picked up a double to account for the runs in the first, while Brian Mauro had a two-run single in the second.
Delaware Valley made it a one-run contest by scoring three times on three hits in the top of the third. With two on and two outs,
Pete O'Hara had an infield hit to bring in one run. O'Hara and
Brandon Bell then scored when
Mike Ferrier rip a double to left-center field.
DeSales took a 6-3 lead in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer by Mauro. Delaware Valley answered in the sixth as an RBI double by
Mike Otstot and a run-scoring ground out by Bell made it a 6-5 ballgame. The Aggies still had a runner on third with two outs after Bell's at-bat, but a ground out ended the inning. Ferrier walked with two outs in the seventh, but reliever Trevor Connors notched a strikeout to complete the save.
Mauro was 3-for-4 with the home run and four RBIs for DeSales. Travis Hughes went four innings and picked up the win.
Otstot went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI while Ferrier was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Delaware Valley.
Jim Calabrese took the loss on the mound.
