WILKES-BARRE (PA) – King's College scored three goals in a 12-minute span in the second half as the top-seeded Lady Monarchs defeated visiting Delaware Valley College, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Freedom Conference tournament.
King's improved to 13-6 on the season and avenged its only conference loss of the year as the Aggies picked up a 2-1 home victory in October. The Lady Monarchs will now host four-time defending champion Eastern University in Sunday's Freedom Conference Championship Game. Eastern, the second seed, posted a 6-4 victory over No. 3 FDU-Florham.
For Delaware Valley, the loss ended its season with a 7-12 overall record. The Aggies, who were picked seventh out of eight teams in the conference preseason coaches' poll, went 4-3 in the Freedom and earned the fourth seed. It was the third time in the last four years that head coach
Carol Di Girolamo's squad reached the conference tournament.
King's scored the lone goal of the opening half as Megan Mundy took a pass from Stephanie Wingerter from the top of the circle and put a shot inside the right post. The tally was Mundy's second of the year and it came with 11:21 remaining in the stanza.
Delaware Valley was awarded a penalty stroke just 1:55 into the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Kelsey Zook stepped up to take the shot and the second-team all-conference honoree beat Lady Monarch goalkeeper Megan Withrow for her seventh goal of the year and a 1-1 contest.
However, King's took the lead or good less than three minutes later as Jackie Sikora took a crossing pass from Calli Berryman and notched her seventh goal of the year. The Lady Monarchs then put the game away with two goals in a 67-second span as Berryman hit for her 18th tally of the year with 19:20 remaining and Alyssa Monaghan followed with her eighth goal of the season with 18:03 to go.
King's outshot the Aggies, 14-7, and also held a 14-4 advantage in corners. Withrow stopped four shots in the win while Delaware Valley's
Sandra Edwards was credited with five saves.
