DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The “weekend warriors” strike again. Delaware Valley College scored twice in the second half, including the game-winning tally by
Taylor Prichett with 8:09 remaining, as the Aggies rallied for a 2-1 victory over King' College to remain perfect on Saturdays and in the Freedom Conference.
Delaware Valley is 5-7 overall with all five wins coming on Saturdays. The last three triumphs have come in conference play as they stand alone atop the Freedom standings (FDU-Florham is a half-game behind and play on Monday). The Aggies were picked seventh out of eight squads in the conference preseason poll. King's, which upended three-time defending champion Eastern University last Saturday, fell to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Lady Monarchs struck first as Calli Berryman hit a dribbler that found its way in the goal. It was Berryman's 13th tally of the season and Kim Howantiz was credit with the assist with 20:12 left in the opening half.
It remained a one-goal contest for the next 38 minutes before Delaware Valley was awarded one of its four penalty corners on the afternoon. Prichett sent a pass to
Rony Jacober and the senior scooped a shot over the goalie and into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
King's put the pressure on after the tying goal and had three shots and four corners over the next few minutes. As the clocked ticked toward the eight-minute mark left in regulation,
Kelsey Zook dribbled down the field and then put a pass right on Prichett's stick. Prichett maneuvered the ball on the other side of a defender and, using her as a screen, blasted a shot past Lady Monarch goalkeeper Megan Withrow. It was the freshman's second goal of the season.
King's had chances at the end, including with 33.7 seconds left when Jackie Sikora put a shot that got past goalkeeper
Sandra Edwards, but Delaware Valley defender
Sara Culver was there for her seventh defensive save of the year, fifth this week. The Lady Monarchs then had a corner opportunity as the horn sounded (game continues on a corner), but the Aggies cleared the ball out of the circle to seal the win.
King's held advantages of 14-10 in shots and 14-4 in corners. Edwards had eight saves in the win while Withrow stopped seven shots for King's.
