DELVAL FIELD HOCKEY FALLS IN CLOSING SECONDS TO NO. 18 ELIZABETHTOWN

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Casey Fletcher scored her second goal of the game with just 19.6 seconds remaining as 18th-ranked Elizabethtown staved off host Delaware Valley College's upset bid with a 3-2, come-from-behind victory.

The Blue Jays improved to 9-3 overall while the loss dropped the Aggies to 4-7. Delaware Valley is 2-0 in Freedom Conference play and it returns to league action on Saturday when it hosts King's College.

The game appeared headed for overtime when Elizabethtown sent a crossing pass into the goal circle off an inbounds opportunity. The ball deflected off the pads of Aggie goalkeeper Sandra Edwards and landed halfway between the goal and the top of the circle. A scramble ensued before Nadine Yunginger was able to slip a pass to Fletcher, who found the low left corner of the cage for the game-winning tally. It was Fletcher's fourth goal of the year.

Delaware Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the nationally-ranked Blue Jays thanks to a pair of goals in the first 12-plus minutes of the game. The first was by Krystle Mazza as the senior took a long pass from Rony Jacober and was on a breakaway. She beat Elizabethtown goalie Lindy Hamp for her first goal of the season with just 4:28 off the clock.

Eight minutes later, the Aggies had a corner and Lydia Spakosky took a pass from Kelzsey Zook and lifted it high over Hamp and into the cage for her first tally of the year.

Fletcher cut the Delaware Valley advantage in half with 14:28 remaining in the first half as she was stationed at the left post and deflected a pass in from Taylor Alwine.

It remained a 2-1 contest until 11:27 into the second stanza when the Blue Jays converted off a corner opportunity. Kaylee Werner sent a pass to Alwine, who blasted it home for her third goal of the year.

Elizabethtown had a number of chances the rest of the way as it finished the second half with 17 shots. Four shots came in a 25-second span that started with a breakaway attempt by Yunginger that was stopped by Edwards with 2:35 remaining. The next three shots were right in front of the net with Edwards stopping the first and defender Sara Culver preventing the next two behind Edwards.

Edwards finished the game with 13 saves and Culver was credited with four defensive saves as the Blue Jays outshot Delaware Valley, 27-6, and also held a 17-2 advantage in corners. Marlena Johnson played the second half in goal for Elizabethtown and was credited with the win.
