DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College scored eight times in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and then held on at the end for an 8-6, Freedom Conference victory over visiting Misericordia University.
It was the fourth straight home victory for the Aggies – all conference games – as they improved to 10-21 overall and ended Freedom action with a 7-14 mark. Delaware Valley will wrap up its season with a non-conference home game against Arcadia University on Wednesday. Misericordia, which had already wrapped up the number one seed for the upcoming Freedom playoffs, fell to 23-12 overall and 14-7 in the league.
The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead by plating both runs in the top of the second. They loaded the bases with nobody out and then notched an RBI single by Danny Price and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Engebrecht.
It remained a 2-0 contest as the game headed to the bottom of the fifth. The Aggies, who had just three hits in the first four stanzas, exploded for seven hits as it sent 13 men to the plate. A bases loaded walk to
Kellen Jarrett put Delaware Valley on the scoreboard and
Zach Chodur gave his team the lead for good with a two-run double. Jake Baben followed with a two-run single and a 5-2 lead.
Jeff Sennett came in to pinch-hit and he drove a triple to right field to score Barben.
Jim Calabrese singled in Sennett for the seventh run and
Pete O'Hara, who had a single earlier in the inning, knocked in the final tally of the inning with a single to left.
After both teams went scoreless in the sixth, Misericordia got back in the game in the seventh as it struck for four runs on four hits. An RBI double by Josh Hippensteel and a two-run, two-bagger by Mike Impellittiere made it an 8-5 ballgame. A pair of wild pitches from the Aggie bullpen allowed Imprellittieri to score for a two-run deficit. However, Delaware Valley got out of the inning with its lead intact as pitcher
Brian Hafer got a called third strike with the bases loaded.
Hafer allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the eighth inning, but got out of that situation. He then retired the Cougars in order in the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts, for his first save of the year. He finished with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed in two-plus innings.
Cody Hudnall improved to 3-4 as he pitched six-plus innings and allowed six runs and nine hits while fanning six. O'Hara finished 3-for-5 while Chodur (2-for-4) and Barben (1-for-4) had two RBIs apiece. Impellittiere was 1-for-5 with two RBIs for Misericordia.
