BATS COME ALIVE IN TWINBILL SWEEP OF EASTERN

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College racked up 24 runs and 31 hits on Senior Day as the Aggies swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from visiting Eastern University, 18-5 and 6-3.

Delaware Valley, which recognized Zach Chodur, Gary Cooper, Brian Hafer, Kellen Jarrett, Bobby Oakes and Mike Thomas in-between games, improved its record to 9-21 overall and 6-14 in the conference. The Eagles fell to 10-23-2 and 6-14-1.

The Aggies scored seven runs in each of the first two innings of the opener to race out to a 14-2 advantage. In the first, they sent 10 batters to the plate and racked up five hits, including a three-run double by Pete O'Hara. O'Hara had also started off the stanza with a single.

Eastern scored two runs in the top of the second on a two-run single by Eric Smith. However, Delaware Valley came right back in the bottom of the inning and recorded six more hits as 12 batters went the plate. O'Hara knocked in another run while Dan Hrubos plated runs on a triple and then a single. Mike Otstot also had two hits in the stanza as he led it off with a double and later added an RBI single.

The Aggies then added three more runs on four hits in the third inning for a 17-2 lead. Cooper and Jim Calabrse each had RBI doubles with Cooper driving in two with his two-bagger. The Eagles put two on the board in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete their scoring. The final Delaware Valley run came in the sixth when Brandon Bell laced an RBI double.

Otstot was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Cooper and O'Hara were each 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Calabrese was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, three runs scored and three RBIs while Hrubos knocked in two runs in a 3-for-5 effort. Chad Schmuck allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings to earn the win.

Mike McNulty was 3-for-4 while Smith was 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Eastern. Nick Moeltner lasted just one inning and suffered the loss.

The nightcap was a 2-2 after four innings of play. Eastern scored its runs in the first and third innings on RBIs by Dan Garcia (single, sacrifice fly). The Aggies got one in the first as Chodur plated O'Hara with a single, and they tied in in the fourth when O'Hara's RBI single brought in Oakes.

The Eagles regained the lead in the fifth as Brendan Spall reached on an error and later scored on a double by McNulty. However, Delaware Valley came right back and took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jarrett made it 3-3 with an RBI single and Oakes followed with a single to load the bases with one out. Calabrese stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run single to left. Two batters later, O'Hara made it 6-3 with an RBI double. Eastern never threatened in the final two stanzas.

O'Hara finished game two 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Calabrese was 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Hrubos added two hits in four at-bats. Dan Spall pitched six strong innings for the win as he allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits. Cody Hudnall pitched a perfect seventh for his first save of the year.

For the Eagles, Garcia was 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Scott Renauro added two hits. John Taylor pitched four-plus innings and took the loss.
