DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Cody Hudnall earned a complete-game victory in the nightcap as host Delaware Valley College salvaged a doubleheader split with Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University. The Colonels took the first contest, 9-2, before the Aggies bounced back with a 4-2 triumph.
In the opener, Delaware Valley (6-15, 3-8 Freedom) outhit Wilkes (14-13, 8-9), 8-7, but hurt itself with 10 walks and six errors. Three of the walks along with an RBI double by Matt Ruch in the first inning helped give the Colonels an early 2-0 lead. The Aggies got one back in the bottom of the third as
Gary Cooper was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by
Zach Chodur.
However, Wilkes came right back and posted five runs in the top of the fourth thanks to four hits, three walks and one Aggie error. Ruch and Richard Cosgrove had RBI doubles while Tom Plessl drove in two with a single. Angus Neary also notched an RBI with a single. The Colonels added a run on a Delaware Valley miscue in the sixth while Plessl drew a bases loaded walk for another tally in the seventh. The Aggies' final run came in the bottom on the seventh as
Mike Otstot drove in Chodur with an RBI single.
Plessl finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs for Wilkes. Ruch was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ryan Fetterman pitched six strong innings for the win. Chodur (2-for-4) and
Kellen Jarrett (2-for-4) had multiple-hit showings for the Aggies.
Dan Spall went four innings and took the loss.
Delaware Valley managed just three hits in the nightcap, compared to nine by the Colonels, but two of them led to two runs in the bottom of the first. Chodur had a two-out single and
Dan Hrubos followed with his second home of the season, a shot over the right field fence.
Wilkes answered in the second as Al Clocker led off with a single and scored on Joel Watson's double to right field. Watson then advanced to third on a ground out and tied the game by scoring on an RBI single by Carmen Lopresto.
Hudnall then settled down and retired seven in a row after Lopresto's hit. Meanwhile, the Aggies regained the advantage in the fourth as Hrubos led off with a walk and moved up to third on a balk and a ground out.
Dylan Bailey walked and was then trying to steal second when Brandon Ball hit a grounder to short. It may have been an inning-ending double play, but the Colonels could not turn it with Bailey and motion and had to settle for the one out at first. That allowed Hrubos to score on the play for a 3-2 advantage. Delaware Valley then loaded the bases and
Pete O'Hara drew a walk to bring in Bailey with the fourth run of the game.
The Colonels threatened in their final three innings at bat, but Hudnall got out of each jam. They had two on in the fifth when Hudnall got the final batter looking at a third strike. Wilkes had three hits in the sixth, but a double play early in the stanza and a liner for the final out ended that threat. Then in the seventh, the Colonels had runners at first and third with two outs when Neary flew out deep to left field to end the game.
The win was the second of the season for Hudnall (2-3), who finished with four strikeouts. Chodur, Hrubos and O'Hara had the lone hits in the game. Clocker, Lopresto and Watson had two hits apiece for Wilkes. Zach Lazar went four innings and took the loss.
