ST. DAVIDS (PA) – Eastern University scored five times in the sixth inning as the Eagles pulled away to a 10-2, Freedom Conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley College.
It was the opener of a three-game series between the two teams. The scene will now shift to Doylestown for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Saturday, but has been moved to Sunday due to the impending rain in the forecast. Friday's victory improved Eastern to 9-13-2 overall and 5-7-1 in the Freedom while the Aggies fell to 5-14 and 2-7.
Delaware Valley hit the scoreboard in the first inning as
Jim Calabrese had a one-out double and eventually scored on an error. The Eagles responded with three tallies in their half of the stanza, including a two-run homer by Greg DeSarro.
The Aggies pulled to within a run in the fourth as
Matt Bodine and
Kellen Jarrett had back-to-back, two-out singles and Bodine crossed home plate on an Eastern miscue. However, the Eagles got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a Delaware Valley error.
Eastern then put the contest away in the sixth as it sent 11 batters to the plate and notched five runs on three hits, four walks, a hit batsmen and an error. The Eagles added their final run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Huber.
DeSarro finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Mike McNulty also drove in a pair of runs in the contest. Nick Moeltner did not allow an earned run and struck out six in seven innings of work to earn the win.
Bodine had three of Delaware Valley's eight hits on the afternoon.
Chad Schmuck allowed four runs (three earned) in four-plus innings and took the loss.
