DELVAL, MANHATTANVILLE SPLIT TWINBILL

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – With both teams playing its fourth and fifth games in the last five days, Delaware Valley College and Manhattanville College split a Freedom Conference doubleheader on Monday. The Aggies took the first game, 8-6, before the Valiants notched a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Delaware Valley (5-13, 2-6 Freedom) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener thanks to a bases loaded walk to Jake Barben and a sacrifice fly by Kellen Jarrett.

Manhattanville (12-11, 4-8) responded with three runs in its half of the second inning as Sean Ferguson had an RBI double and scored on a triple by Hans Arias. Arias then crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Matt Petrunti.

The Aggies tied the game in the bottom of the second as Jim Calabrese walked, stole second and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Pete O'Hara. The two teams failed to score over the next innings before Manhattanville regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring single by Alex Braverman.

However, Delaware Valley took command in the bottom of the fifth as it sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs on four hits and one Valiant error. Barben tied the contest at 4-4 with an RBI single. Then with two outs, Calabrese ripped a two-run single. The Aggies reloaded the bases and O'Hara came through with a two-run single of his own for an 8-4 Delaware Valley advantage.

Manhattanville made things interesting in the sixth as a two-run single by Chris Nardozzi made it a two-run game. The Valiants then put the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but Aggie starter Cody Hudnall got a fly out and a game-ending double play for the win. Hudnall allowed six runs and 10 hits, but struck out seven and improved to 1-3.

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Calabrese and Manhattanville's Dan Fiorito as the two combined to allow just four runs and eight hits over 13 innings (Delaware Valley's Spencer Smith pitched the seventh and did not allow a hit).

The Valiants hit the scoreboard in the top of the third on an RBI single by Braverman. Delaware Valley countered in its half of the stanza with a run on a passed ball.

Manhattanville took the lead for good in the fifth as Braverman had a sacrifice fly to score one run and Fiorito helped his own cause with a run-scoring single. The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with just one out. However, Fiorito got a fly out and a ground out to end the threat. Fiorito finished the game by allowing one unearned run and two hits. Braverman was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Calabrese took the loss despite allowing just three runs (one earned) and six hits. O'Hara and Brandon Bell had the lone hits for Delaware Valley.
