DOYLESTOWN (PA) – DeSales University scored seven runs over the first three innings of the opener and then put seven on the board in the fifth inning of the nightcap to key the Bulldogs' sweep of a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Delaware Valley College, 8-3 and 10-4.
The wins improved DeSales to 13-8 overall and 8-2 in league action while the Aggies fell to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the Freedom.
The opener saw the Bulldogs strike in the top of the first thanks to a two-run double by Brian Mauro. The Aggies came right back in the bottom of the stanza as
Zach Chodur led off with his first home run of the season. They put two runners on base and they both scored on a DeSales error for a 3-2 Delaware Valley lead.
However, the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the second as one tally scored on a wild pitch and the other two came on a bases loaded walk to Mauro and an RBI single by Carson Slonaker. They then added two more in the third innings on run-scoring single by Doc Neiman and Jason Hadinger. The final run of the game scored on a fielder's choice by Bill Marriott in the sixth.
David Drinks picked up the win as he allowed three runs (one earned) and eight hits in five-plus innings. Mauro was 1-for-3 with three RBIs while Hadiner and Jack Kavetski had two hits apiece. For the Aggies, Chdour, Hrubos and
Pete O'Hara notched two hits apiece.
Brian Hafer lasted just two innings and suffered the loss.
In the second game, DeSales put a run on the board in the first as Neiman doubled and later scored on a single by Hadinger. Delaware Valley took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as O'Hara led off the stanza with a triple and scored when Chodur reached on an error. Chodur stole second and then scored on
Dan Hrubos' double. DeSales regained the lead in the fourth as Kavetski smacked an RBI double and Neiman followed with a run-scoring single.
The Bulldogs then put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as they scored seven runs on five hits and one Aggie error. After Slonaker reached on a miscue, Charles Dennis hit his first homer of the season for a 5-2 advantage. They then loaded the bases and Mauro blasted a grand slam home run over the right field fence. Later in the inning, Derek Chrismer knocked in a run with a double for a 10-2 lead.
Delaware Valley put its final runs on the board in the seventh as pinch-hitter
Dylan Bailey had an RBI single and one more scored on a double-play ball. The Aggies had 11 hits in the game including 2-for-3 showings by Hrubos and
Mike Thomas.
Dan Spall went four-plus innings and took the loss.
Neiman was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and five RBIs for DeSales. Dennis finished 1-for-3 with the two-run homer. Colby Pacillo earned the win as he allowed just two runs (one earned) and eight hits over six innings.
