PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to an 11-5 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
Saturday's action was supposed to be the doubleheader between the two teams in Doylestown. However, the inclement weather from the past few days left the field unplayable. Friday's nine-inning series opener at Manhattanville was postponed, but was able to take place on Saturday.
It was the first game for the Aggies in more than a week as their record fell to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the Freedom. The Valiants improved to 9-4 and 2-2.
Manhattanville picked up a pair of tallies in the second on a sacrifice fly by Hans Arias and an RBI single by Chad Wallace. It added four more in the fourth thanks to five hits and one Delaware Valley errors. Arias and Wallace drove in runs again, this time with a single and a double respectively. The Valiants then made it 7-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Gallace.
The Aggies got on the board in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs on singles by
Matt Bodine and
Dan Hrubos and
Kellen Jarrett getting hit by a pitch.
Jake Barben then delivered a two-run single to make it a 7-2 contest.
However, Manhattanville responded with four runs in the seventh on two hits and two Aggie miscues. The big blow was a two-run single by pinch-hitter Ryan Blinderman. Delaware Valley notched its final runs of the afternoon in the ninth inning as
Jim Calabrese had a two-run double and
Pete O'Hara brought one in on a ground out.
Alex Basso picked up the win for the Valiants as he went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Offensively, Wallace was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Chris Nardozzi was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Arias, Blinderman and Gallace notched two RBIs apiece.
Barben was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Aggies. Calabrese added two hits and two RBIs in four trips to the plate.
Chad Schmuck took the loss as he allowed six runs (five earned) over four innings.
