FORT PIERCE (FL) – The Delaware Valley College baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks Thursday in Florida. The Aggies rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth of the opener, but surrendered a run in the bottom of the stanza for a 10-9 loss to SUNY Oswego. They then followed with an 8-5 loss to Bethany College.
Delaware Valley is now 2-6 on the season. The squad has one game remaining on its Spring Break schedule, a meeting with Franciscan University on Saturday morning, before heading back up North.
The Aggies were down 9-6 in the opener when they mounted their ninth-inning comeback.
Zach Chodur led off the stanza with a double and he scored on
Pete O'Hara's single. O'Hara then came around to score on an RBI double by
Dan Hrubos that made it a one-run game.
Jake Barben followed with a run-scoring double of his own as Hrubos crossed the plate to make it 9-9. Barben was thrown out at the plate later in the inning and Delaware Valley could not muster any more runs to take the lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Scott Buniak led off with a double and he moved to third on a one-out single by Bob Gage. After a strikeout, Mike Tarnowski hit a grounder that was booted for an error and Buniak came across with the running run for the Lakers (7-2).
The Aggies had 12 hits in the contest including three apiece by Chodur and O'Hara. O'Hara also scored three runs and drove in three. Barben was 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
The second game of the day saw Delaware Valley hold a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, Bethany (4-2) notched five runs off of six hits in the inning to take the lead for good. Delaware Valley had a pair of runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Bison were able to get out of the jam each time.
Delaware Valley had another 12-hit attack as Barben, Chodur, O'Hara and
Cory Weingart had two apiece. O'Hara also drove in two runs in the contest.
