DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from an 8-7 deficit and defeat visiting Wilkes University, 11-9, in the opener of a three-game Freedom Conference series between the two squads.
The Aggies improved to 13-19-1 and 5-14 in the Freedom while Wilkes saw its marks drop to 12-19 and 4-15. The series will now shift up to the Ralston Field complex in Edwardsville for a doubleheader on Saturday.
Delaware Valley held a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the eighth inning. However, a two-out error allowed the Colonels an extra opportunity and they advantage of it with four runs in the stanza. Randy Dengler had the big blow with a three-run double.
The Aggies came right back in the bottom of the inning and tied it as
Dylan Saldutti scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning,
Zach Chodur hit a clutch two-out, two-run single to give Delaware Valley the lead for good at 10-8. Chodur then stole second and
Cory Weingart brought him home with an RBI single to complete the four-run inning.
Wilkes managed a run in the ninth, but
Cody Hudnall finished the job for the freshman's third save of the season.
Mike Cavallaro picked up the win in relief of
Sean Tappan, who went seven-plus innings and allowed just three earned runs. Tappan, a senior, fanned seven batters in the contest and, in the process, moved up to third place on the all-time list with 190 career K's.
Offensively, senior
Mike Isgro continued to move up the career charts as he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. The three hits increased his hit total to 177 and moved him into fourth place while he moved into the number sixth spot with 115 runs scored. Isgro is already the school's all-time leader with 130 RBIs and third in doubles (32), triples (12) and home runs (16).
Dan Hrubos went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Chodur had just one hit in five at-bats, but it was the big hit in the eighth and he finished the afternoon with three RBIs.
Jake Barben knocked in a pair of runs in the victory.
Matt Ruch was a force at the plate as he went 3-for-6 with a two-run homer. Mike McAndrew picked up two hits and scored two runs as well. Ryan Fetterman took the loss.
